City of DavidCity of David (disambiguation) – "City of David", as a term, has a clear WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, which is the ancient city of Jerusalem (a meaning and naming also theologically significant in both Judaism and Christianity), to which this page should redirect. This academic usage in English dates back to the 1800s (see Ngrams), while the other meanings all simple draw upon this historic pedigree. • Oppose. Wikinav shows nobody clicked on the Jersulem link from this page (see [1]). That is probably because the link was only recently added. I'd wait some time to see if Jerusalem is the most clicked link. Vpab15 (talk) 10:29, 25 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
In google scholar, most articles refer to the excavation of the City of David. I'd say the archeological site is probably the primary topic. Vpab15 (talk) 10:33, 25 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
But the very meaning of the name is a subsidiary of and subordinate to the sense of "City of David" as a name for Jerusalem. That is, in fact, the entire point of the rather intentional naming of the archaeological site, which seeks to blur biblical history and archaeological fact. The archaeological site, by piggy-backing on the name, is staking its claim to being the ancient city of Jerusalem. Iskandar323 (talk) 11:17, 25 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Scholarly mentions of the name with "excavations(s) and archaeology" extracted still amount to 6,850 hits, versus 3,150 hits for those including "excavation". Iskandar323 (talk) 11:20, 25 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. I wonder if a page about the term "City of David" would actually be primary topic. Very few people would type in City of David in an attempt to reach Jerusalem. And in fact, the Gospel of Luke uses the term "city of David" to refer to the completely separate town of Bethlehem. Red Slash 17:25, 27 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Red Slash: Yes, I agree it probably would. Unfortunately it doesn't exist at present, so the natural place for 'City of David' to redirect to is Jerusalem, which at least explains the term to some extent. However, in theory, quite a sizeable independent article could be drawn up on the subject. The move would still better pave the way for this to be done, by freeing up 'City of David' as a page title.
