Advertisment?[edit]

I don't think its an advertisement (in so much as it doesn't ask or entice), but I do think that its almost non-informative. The list of affiliated agencies could be shortened to detail only those not already in the wikipedia. The core groups descriptions are fine, and the intro isn't bad, but does need a little massaging. What's needed is more description of the program: how it works, NPV politics behind it, how its funded, so that there's a better tie into the threads of U.S. govt, volunteerism, and emergency management/response. Maybe "advertisement" isn't quite the right term for it, but it does seem like much of the article is written by someone affiliated with the organization. The writing style is something like a PR department would put out, rather than the detached expository writing style that Wikipedia usually uses.
I don't think the article should be deleted or radically reduced — the organization is important. But it could be rewritten a bit.
Part of the problem is that portions of the article are copy-n-pasted directly from the Citizen Corps website. This actually isn't a copyvio, because it's a work of the federal government, however the writing is stilted and should be rewritten.
The article currently includes things like "Capture innovative practices and report accomplishments that can be replicated in other communities nationwide.". Besides being a direct cut-n-paste, it's also totally unnecessay in an encyclopedic article because that information is really only useful for an internal audience. --Hirsutism (talk) 16:52, 21 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Citizen Corps is a very important part of community preparedness. I am a member of my local Citizen Corps Board (female Veteran over 60 from Texas and retired) and I spend a lot of time training people for emergency response. Our county has CERT programs (Community Emergency Response Teams)taught and organized by local fire departments. For those living out in the county away from major cities, we have another program called PCNET which is similar. CERT programs are taught at a fire station, but PCNET (Pierce County Neighborhood Emergency Team) is taught to neighborhoods in one of their homes.

In a large disaster, Firemen may not be able to get to you for a week or two. It is important that everyone have at least 1 to 2 weeks of food and water for each person in their household. If you have CERT training, you can put out small fires and then check on your elderly and disabled neighbors. If you are not ready, then you will be spending all your time trying to get food and water for yourself and family or trying to call 911 to help a neighbor trapped in their house (and possibly adding to the traffic that collapses the local cell phone system). After an earthquake, DO NOT CALL 911 and ask, "Was that an earthquake?" (biggest cause of cell phone collapse afterwards). After any kind of an emergency, try to text first - it uses less bandwidth than a phone call and therefore does not put as much stress on the system. Make sure you have a radio so you can hear the news (some you can run on batteries, or solar, or turn a crank to recharge). One which can pick up local TV stations is good to have and they can be as small as a transistor (store batteries).

We train groups to be emergency shelters and also train people to operate pet co-shelters. If you need to research emergency pet sheltering (for pets that belong to people that have evacuated), do a search for CARTs and SARTs (County Animal Response Teams and State Animal Response Teams). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Klebeter (talk • contribs) 23:40, 22 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
