hi guys, i just added the synopsis. very well written, from my french cinema book. edit it make it look nice for me cause i dont know how to do all the finishing touches for thsi wikipedia shit so yeah :D[edit]

Stage Version?[edit]

Minneapolis-based Theater de la Jeune Lune did an amazing adaptation of this movie and the making of it in a 1992 show titled "Children of Paradise: Shooting a Dream" [1].

Production section[edit]

One editor User talk:140.103.236.176 has replaced with his/her own worlds and then removed a sentence from this section which reads:

"In fact, the extended production of Children of Paradise, which took place during 1943 and 1944, was a veritable tour de force of French spirit overcoming adversities in the wake of their military defeat." andwhich looks like it was added by User talk:167.206.19.12.

Period of the film's setting[edit]

It must be set during the July Monarchy. The Easter week carnivals at either end of the film were unique to this period. I fear an accusation of OR is likely to arise here. In any case there are inconsistancies in the article. We were told before my edit that the film is set (not "begins") around 1840, a curious stylistic point given that we are referring to a film which takes place over more than seven years, but the 'Plot Synopsis' section then suggests 1827. While the business with Lemaitre and the Lion costume would appear to date from 1827 in the life of the real Frédérick Lemaître, it is the only reason I am aware of to date the start of the film to 1827. I've just (Feb. 2021) watched the Criterion Collection's excellent 2-CD edition (2002) Included is a booklet with extensive excerpts of a 1990 interview with director Michael Carné and a brief introduction by film writer Peter Cowie. Children of Paradise, Cowie writes, “sweeps its audience back to the 1920s....” I don't know if that's the final word on the epoch portrayed, just another data point. Character of Garance[edit]

It is doubtful whether Garance should be described as a courtesan, as this article does (not, at least, by todays standards). She seems rather more fastidious than the average American college student. She doesn't have to get plastered to seduce a man, nor does she wake up wondering who is next to her in bed. When the good-looking and fantastically rich aristocrat, Édouard de Montray, admits his obsession with her and offers to share all that he has, she rejects him out of hand. It is only later, when falsely charged with criminal conspiracy, that she turns to him for help. Nor is there any hint of commercial motivation in her relationships with Lacenaire, Le Maitre or Debureau.

Film division in two parts[edit]

The term "epoche" as opposed to "a l'epoche" which means "of the period" in French. It is used in France in regard to long motion pictures and means part of the film, not the time when the story unfolds. Therefore the film divided in two parts. This is a common misconception in English speaking countries where translators tend to ignore the professional film production/distribution jargon.
