Comparison with the USA[edit]

I felt the comparison to the US situation was, first of all, a bit anglocentric. More importantly, it was innaccurate, technically speaking. The Chief Justice of the United States is not the "Chief Justice of the Supreme Court". I do understand the writer's point, and it is an important one; namely, that the Irish jurist wears several hats, unlike his American counterpart. Nonetheless, that point can be and still is being made with this excision, without invoking a statement that does not bear up to technical observation. Unschool 17:01, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Title[edit]

The Constitution of Ireland, Article 34.4.2 states:

The president of the Supreme Court shall be called the Chief Justice.

It does not attribute any additional title to him, such as the "Chief Justice of the Supreme Court" or the "Chief Justice of Ireland". The primary legislation which created the courts sytem (Courts (Establishment and Constitution) Act, 1961) which is mandated in the constitution concurs with simply "Chief Justice", and no additional title. Interesting. Seems like there is no such position as Chief Justice of Ireland. I have no expertise in law and my changes of yesterday were based only on info from other wp pages. I suggest someone who has expertise be bold and revise the article and/or its title to provide an accurate representation. I can find two mentions of "Chief Justice of Ireland" after 1937 on irishstatutebook.ie, whilst their are none of "Chief Justice of the Supreme Court" in the same period. Irish Free State Supreme Court might be of interest as it explains the significance of 1961, as the Courts of Justice Act, 1924 (Section 5) designated the Chief Justice as the "Chief Justice of the Irish Free State" in 1924 and continued in force until 1961 (but this does not neccessarily mean the old title was retained); so Chief Justice of Ireland would not be an unprecidented title.

On courts.ie the "Chief Justice of Ireland" recieves 43 hits (including official court documents) against 2 hits for "Chief Justice of the Supreme Court", neither of these former two are official court documents.

Regarding the supposed change of title from "Chief Justice of the Irish Free State" to "Chief Justice of Ireland", i think the Constitution (Consequential Provisions) Act, 1937 would of done this? Djegan 22:14, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
