Current status: Good article

World's Largest?[edit]

I've removed the claim, in the opening paragraph, that the Chicago Marathon is the "world's largest." [1] says Chicago was second to NYCM by some 4,000 finishers in 2006. Chicago is on track to be larger in 2007, but we can fix that when it happens. --Pjmorse 20:25, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Inaugural Year?[edit]

Was it 1977? The article should state it, if known.--Rajah 00:17, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Collaboration of the week template[edit]

A dispute has arisen over the placement of Wikipedia:WikiProject Chicago project's "Collaboration of the Week" template on this article. I've posted a comment on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject about it in order to reach a broader audience, and would like to invite comment from interested editors. -- MisterHand (Talk to the Hand|Contribs) 20:24, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dubious citation[edit]

Citation #5 (Suozzo, p. 6.) is not complete since it does not allow me to verify the true source. What is "Suozzo"?

I stand corrected, the full reference occurs in the references section - Suozzo, Andrew, "The Chicago Marathon", University of Illinois Press, 2006, ISBN 0-252-07421-1. Personally I feel this is undesirable because people like myself may miss it. But maybe that's the standard wiki way?

Citation #36 (Henderson) seems sketchy to me. It reads like a blog (especially the next entry down on the cited page), and doesn't actually verify anything, as the only mention of relevant info is attributed to "The Chicago Tribune". This citation should be removed, I think, because the blog-feel, and lack of meaningful contribution of info to the article makes it noticeably weak.

Henderson, for what it's worth, is this Henderson. It's distinctly possible that the presentation makes the article sketchy, but the author knows what he's talking about. --Pjmorse 12:06, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Winners table[edit]

There appears to be a problem with the sortable winners table. The first 3 columns sort OK but the remaining columns just takes me to the top of the article, leaving the table unsorted. Just in-case it is a browser problem I am using Firefox 2.0.0.7. Any ideas? Keith D 17:44, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    No edit wars etc.:
  6. It is illustrated by images, where possible and appropriate.
a (images are tagged and non-free images have fair use rationales): b (appropriate use with suitable captions):
  7. Overall:
    Pass/Fail:

A nice article, but there are some issues that need to be addressed before I can promote this to GA status:

  1. There are too many redlinks in the article. The list of winners should only have links if that person has a page and, if they do, their name only needs to be linked once. In addition, unless any of the people who died during the marathon are notable (and I'm fairly sure that they're not), they should be delinked as well.
I have delinked all deceased runner links and redundant winner links. However, I believe we should expect articles for past winners of the race so I am leaving those linked. In my past experience at Chicago Landmarks, such redlinks of articles that should exist has inspired article creation.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 18:30, 7 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    I see someone has linked Toshihiko Seko for us.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 14:38, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  2. I think the race is today (though I'm not certain, which is why I haven't made the change) and, if it is, the all tenses concerning the 2007 race should be moved from future to past (there's one at the bottom of History, another in Statistics) Also, the 2007 winner should be added and the country chart updated. Done--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 18:40, 7 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  3. In History, the paragraph sizes are very awkward. You have one gigantic paragraph, followed by three very small ones. The smaller ones should certainly be either combined or expanded, and the bigger one should be broken into at least two, at an appropriate breaking point. Done--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 14:32, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  4. The statistics section flows very awkwardly. To start with, the section begins with a pronoun without having introduced the subject (obviously "it" is the "The Chicago Marathon," but you should state that instead of using a pronoun). Then, what follows, is a long series of very short sentences that could be easily combined to avoid the full stops that choke the read up when reading the section. Done I hope this is what you are looking for.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 23:21, 7 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  5. Sentences (in an encyclopedia at least) should never begin with "however," "but," or "and." I caught most of the "however" starters, but there is one in the statistics section that needs to be fixed and I didn't wade through the references (another problem with the stoppy nature of the section) to find where it was. Done--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 14:50, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  6. "As an example, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society required participants to raise $1400 to be a team member in 2004.[39] Children's Memorial Hospital only has a $500 requirement" should be incorporated into the paragraph above, rather than stand alone below the table. Done--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 22:35, 7 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  7. Under Deaths, the sentence after the dash is not capitalized in the first instance, but it is in every other one. This should be standardized.  Done--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 22:27, 7 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

To allow for these changes to be made, I am putting the article on hold for a period of up to seven days, after which it may be failed without further notice. Cheers, CP 17:31, 7 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it seems to meet all of the GA criteria now. I would still recommend that the red links disappear at some point, one way or the other, but that one minor problem shouldn't get in the way of me passing this as a Good Article. Congratulations! Cheers, CP 15:00, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

2007 Marathon[edit]

I don't want to change anything with the current GA going on, but I have seen that it was a record temperature for the event with the previous one being 84 in 1979. [2] I know its a current event, so that is another reason I am not going to change it right now.--Kranar drogin 11:14, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think you need to be clear that there are two records at issue. The Chicago Marathon, which is held on different dates each year has an 84 record. October 7th has an 86 record. I believe both were broken by high 80s heat.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 14:13, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Course Map[edit]

Would it be good to have an image of the course map here? Assuming it is permitted to publish a copy here. KyuuA4 (Talk:キュウ) 20:08, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Middle Class Values[edit]

The description of demographics attributes the values of hard work, determination, etc. as "middle-class." This adds nothing to the article, and only serves to imply that middle class yuppies are a bastion of values lacking in others. It should be removed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.123.14.2 (talk) 18:13, 20 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Agree. Reading that section "sounds" very very iffy. KyuuA4 (Talk:キュウ) 21:18, 21 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
