Sophisticated Comedy?[edit]

[...]age and the shift in moviegoer tastes to more sophisticated comedy saw his roles limited to secondary or smaller parts.

Tastes in film comedy changed, but did it really become more "sophisticated?"

The choreography involved in the scenes that Chaplin and Conklin had together in "Modern Times" and "The Great Dictator" are quite sophisticated.

The difference is that tastes shifted towards verbal comedies, romantic comedies, and comedies of manners, aided by developments in technology. It's a shift of comedic genres, not greater sophistication.

That said, he worked a longer career than most film actors of his generation could have hoped for.
