which year ("nominal", or when "announced"?) (or: none?) for Infobox?[edit]

After I read the press release (see http://www.webcitation.org/5o6kRE5V6) about the Turing Award, I found that this article had already been updated to say (in part), "In 2010 he was named by the Association for Computing Machinery as the recipient of the 2009 ACM A.M. Turing Award[1]...". (Good!) However, it did not have a "ref" pointing to the official ACM press release (on the web) (I added that).

But now, I have a question. This may be no big deal, but what year (if any) should be shown, in the Infobox, where it mentions the "Turing Award? The "nominal" year (as shown in the

box) is 2009, but the announcement was not made until today (see footnote [1] of the article), (well, that is, the footnote that ends with "Retrieved March 09, 2010"; its number can change, and it has changed, and by Aug. 2010 it was footnote [5] :-) and (currently), this article's Infobox lists "2010" for when Charles_P._Thacker won the award.

I checked the articles about other Turing Award winners, (since about the late 80s), and most of them do not have ANY year shown in their infobox. (Some do not even have an infobox!) One of the winners' article, (Alan Kay) had an infobox, but with no "awards" field! (I fixed that -- including some other awards, besides this one!).

The ones I did find, (articles about other Turing Award winners, since about the late 80s), which had a year shown, in their infobox, were Joseph Sifakis (2007) and Raj Reddy (1994). For both Sifakis and Reddy, the dates shown in their infobox "Notable Awards" fields, were the nominal years (not the year announced).

Actually, for consistency (with the "majority" of articles about other Turing Award winners, since about the late 80s), maybe the best thing to do, would be to "not" mention ANY year in the infobox.

I am not in a hurry to insist on a "speedy" deletion, or any other "speedy" achievement of consensus. Your comments would be welcome. --Mike Schwartz (talk) 20:54, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • In a brief scene from Pirates of Silicon Valley (IMDB Profile, Wiki), several Xerox PARC employees are portrayed. One of the actors is probably portraying Thacker.
