Umbrella[edit]

Lord Charles Bowen, Baron Bowen was justifiably noted for his many erudite rulings in the British Law Courts. Perhaps his most incisive and verbally economic observation from a legal and socialogical perspective is as follows:

“The rain it raineth on the just And also on the unjust fella; But chiefly on the just, because The unjust steals the just’s umbrella.”

That says it all really. A fine brain must have lived beneath that wig.

But chiefly on the just, because
The unjust has stolen the just’s umbrella.” (Lord Bowen 1923)

The rain, it raineth on the Just and the Unjust fella.
But chiefly on the Just because
The Unjust steals the Just's umbrella.
The actual quote is:
'The rain it raineth on the just
And also on the unjust fella:
But chiefly on the just, because
The unjust steals the just's umbrella.'
and comes from 'Sichel, Sands of Time' by Charles Bowen, 1st Baron.
I don't mind so much the inaccuracies in the quote, but the lack of attribution is pretty poor.
http://home.vicnet.net.au/~rckew/Thoughts.htm has
God sends his rain upon the just and upon the unjust fella; but more upon the just because the unjust has pinched the just’s umbrella.’
Emphasis is mine.
And then, of course, there's the version in the article.

I amended the article's version to Bowen's, per your cit and the external source given in the article. Seems silly to leave it differ.  • Lainagier • talk • 23:19, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

origin of the text?[edit]

I rather wonder where the biographical text was copied from. Much of it is obviously not original writing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.118.94.176 (talk) 20:16, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

While I would question the use of the word obviously, some of it reads very much like a DNB article. --Bejnar (talk) 03:43, 20 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Part of the text is from a publication now in the public domain, namely: Chisholm, Hugh, ed. (1911). Encyclopædia Britannica (11th ed.). --Bejnar (talk) 03:49, 20 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Title of article[edit]

Why is "Baron Bowen" included as part of the title on this article? --Bejnar (talk) 03:43, 20 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think the name should be "Charles, Baron Bowen"; but "Charles Bowen, Baron Bowen" seems better for searching. 94.30.84.71 (talk) 18:07, 8 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
