London Borough[edit]

Q: Since when is Chadwell Heath part of Barking and Dagenham?? My family who live there come under Redbridge (and my school - that's in Chadwell Heath - would come under Redbridge's education authority, if we weren't grant maintained!) --SaraFL 13:45, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You may have lived on the western part where the main high road and station are, which is in Redbridge. Go further East of the station then you are in Barking and Dagenham. LDas12345 (talk) 10:36, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A: Since ever, really. Chadwell Street, in present day LB Redbridge, fell out of use as a place name and became effectively part of Chadwell Heath, which was in the Parish of Dagenham.

Moved from article: [Dispute - "Chadwell Heath" as a place name is not limited to LB Barking & Dagenham. Parts of RM6 in LB Redbridge are commonly referred to as Chadwell Heath. Halfords branch in RM6 (as an example) gives its address as Chadwell Heath, and the former Chadwell Heath Police Station - now the Eva Hart pub, is in LB Redbridge. LB Redbridge has a Chadwell Ward and two of the ward's councillors gives their address as Chadwell Heath.]
The correct place to sort such matters out, is on the talk page. Kbthompson 13:14, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I revised the text to try to show that the district spills over the borough boundary. There are a number of reasons why these things happen:

  1. The post code comes to determine the name of surrounding places
  2. Districts around stations come to be named for the stations
  3. The historical core would be added to one borough, but further development has subsequently extended the settlement into an adjacent one. (Green areas often do that, the green and original development lies in one place, but building commences on the other side.

Local News Coverage[edit]

Why is the word 'farting' in the 'Local News Coverage' section? GregCovey (talk) 03:09, 11 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Probably vandalism. —Darkwind (talk) 03:10, 11 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Source: Willey[edit]

This article has caused some edit warring in the past about where it actually is. Willey (2006) p. 84 provides the following (summarised):

  • Associated with Romford for postal purposes only
  • Strongest connection to Ilford
  • Started as a settlement in Dagenham parish, called Blackheath until around 1600
  • Grew to absorb Chadwell Street hamlet in Barking ancient parish (now Redbridge)
  • Redbridge area more owner occupation and B&D section more council tenants (I guess this reflects the different housing policies of Ilford/Dagenham)

Hopefully that will clears things up. MRSC (talk) 11:38, 25 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Local authorities - Chadwell Street - disambiguation[edit]

Chadwell Street would anciently have been in the Parish/Borough of Barking, and Chadwell Heath in the Parish/Borough of Dagenham.

The Civil Parish of Ilford split from the Civil Parish of Barking in 1888, meaning Chadwell Street was in the Parish/Borough of Ilford (though I don't know if the place name was still in use then).

The Borough of Ilford was subsumed into the London Borough of Redbridge on 1/4/1965 and the Borough of Dagenham into the London Borough of Barking the same day.

The London Borough of Barking was renamed the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham in 1980.

Town?[edit]

Chadwell Heath is not a town in any meaningful/historic sense. It does not have, and has never had a Town Hall, for example. 82.46.163.160 (talk) 18:40, 10 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, see this edit summary of mine and my subsequent edit to the opening. As I'm not from the area I don't want to get involved any further. Graham87 (talk) 08:01, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
