Notes on Karachentsev names[edit]

Karachentsev uses some names that are unconventional by astronomy standards. I have attempted to replace these names with more common catalog names when appropriate. In some cases, Karachentsev's designations are the only ones attached to the objects, so they should be used.

Notes on looking up specific desginations in the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED):

  • Objects labeled with "KK" may be found in NED using "[KK98]".
  • Objects labeled with "KKs" may be found in NED using "[KK2000]".
  • "Cen 7" may be found in NED using "[CFC97] CEN 7".

For example, a search on "KKs 55" in NED should be done using "[KK2000] 55".

Groups near to each other?[edit]

It is said in this article "However, the galaxies around Centaurus A and the galaxies around M83 are physically close to each other, and both subgroups appear not to be moving relative to each other" - with the Karachentev 2005 paper as reference, when what that paper actually says is"The group of galaxies around M83 (=NGC 5236) actually has the same mean radial velocity (+308 km s1) as the Cen A Group (+312 km s1), but the distance from us appreciably larger (4.56 Mpc) than that of the Cen A Group (3.66 Mpc)."

So can we say they are they close to each other or not? Alexander110 (talk) 06:40, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
