Cardiff International Pool specifications[edit]

Welshleprechaun claims that this is the only Olympic standard pool in Wales - but how do the design specs compare to the Wales National Pool? Do either really meet FINA standards? Note: I should have said that I see various claims about specs made in the List of Olympic size swimming pools in the United Kingdom, but these do not appear to be supported by adequate external references. I'm particularly concerned to clarify the apparent substandard width of the Wales National Pool, and to prove or disprove the forum post about the substandard training facility at the Cardiff International Pool. Just found a reference that confirms the WNP is not up to standard - www.sussexsport.org/docs/50%20m%20Pool%20Report.doc - it is indeed not wide enough, being only 50m by 21m. Now need to clarify the adequacy of the training facilities at Cardiff.Pondle (talk) 23:02, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

From About Olympic and 50m Swimming pools in the UK "An Olympic Pool must be 25m wide with a depth of 2.0m (min) at all parts of the course and must be 50m in length - between touch panels if they are used. The 25m width is to allow for 8 lanes to be 2.5m wide minimum with 2 spaces of 2.5m wide outside lane 1 and 8. So this is 2.5 x 8 lanes = 20m + (2.5m x 2) = 25m in total. What this means is that only few of the pools here can truly be called Olympic pools: - Sheffield, Tolcross, Dublin and a few others. Thanks Seth. I saw those comments, but I'm also concerned to verify whether a training pool of given specs is also required to meet "Olympic standard" as "DaiB" suggests in that forum post. Pedantic, I know, but sometimes the hype obscures the reality (e.g. in the case of the much-lauded Wales National Pool).Pondle (talk) 23:58, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The pool was not classifed Olympic Standard because it did not have a sufficient climate control system. The size and shape were clarified by the London 2012 Olympic Organisers before the pool was completed. A silly mistake for such a lovely pool which was boosted by the 2012 Olympics.
