Inspiration?[edit]

According to the Edda, Fenrisulfr bites off the hand of Týr (John Bauer, 1911)

Couldn't resist. Can anyone find a source for someone linking Tolkien's story of Carcharoth and Beren with Fenrir and Tyr? Carcharoth (talk) 18:34, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, Shippey wouldn't miss this, would he? :-) See The Tale of Beren and Lúthien#cite note-3: "Tom Shippey, The Road to Middle Earth, pp. 193–194: "The hunting of the great wolf recalls the chase of the boar Twrch Trwyth in the Welsh Mabinogion, while the motif of 'the hand in the wolf's mouth' is one of the most famous parts of the Prose Edda, told of Fenris Wolf and the god Tyr; Huan recalls several faithful hounds of legend, Garm, Gelert, Cafall."" This is going straight into that article and this one! Carcharoth (talk) 18:38, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

werewolf?[edit]

Carcharoth is referred to here as a werewolf (literally, "man wolf"). Is this accurate? Is Carcharoth a human who shifts into wolf form? If so, this should be referenced. If not, the word werewolf should be changed. Geoffrey.landis (talk) 14:32, 8 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Contesting proposed deletion[edit]

My reasons for contesting the proposed deletion (I have read Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Werewolf (Middle-earth) and looked at the relevant section of List of Middle-earth animals:

If this article is taken to AfD, please could my note be copied across there, as I may not have time to check back. I am not particularly attached to this article, despite using this character as my username when I created my account in 2005. I would hope that any useful content would be merged elsewhere. There is still the potential to use academic sources in many of the Tolkien in-universe articles, with lots of books on the topic and 15 years and counting of articles in the journal Tolkien Studies (among others). It is not easy to do, and getting the balance right between summary style and detail is not easy, but I would hope that deletions would not preclude future work on these topics.
