Purpose of article[edit]

I'm not sure what the purpose of this separate article is. The maps are identical to the gallery at Colonial Brazil#Administrative evolution, and the text is copy pasted from Captaincy Colonies of Brazil. This article (and that one), substantial duplicates of portions of content in Colonial Brazil.Sbalfour (talk) 15:29, 21 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It may be sparse at present. But I expect it to be filled out more (started doing it myself, then got distracted by other things).

I added some stuff, to give some structure. What about Captaincy Colonies of Brazil? If there were anything useful there, I'd pull it in. As it is, it looks like a permanent stub. Are you opposed to merging that article into this one?Sbalfour (talk) 04:57, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Subsumption by Governorates section is misleading[edit]

There was a period about 1572 during the governates of Cristavao de Barros and/or Antonio de Salema (or both) and also during the Governate of Afonso de Albuquerque (1608-1614) when Rio de Janeiro was detached from the Governnate-General in Bahia, however, the permanent change was in 1763 when the Governnate-General was moved from Bahia to Rio de Janeiro. Moreover, while in retrospect it certainly seems correct to say that the captaincies were subsumed by the Governnates, it is just as true that the crown ruled its overseas possessions in what ever manner it could, varying according to inclination of the King and the abilities and influence of his governing officials, both in Portugal and abroad. I expect that at some point I will revise at least this section to better reflect this reality. The subsumption, if we stick with that term, could really only be said to be completed in 1775 when the Estado de Maranhao was subordinated to the Viceroy in Rio de Janeira and all of Brazil was administered under one single administration.P2dwight (talk) 21:19, 8 February 2021 (UTC)I guess before getting to the "Subsumption by Governorates" section I will revise the intro. Although some authors have used "fief" in discussion my take on these "feufal' terms is that many scholars consider that while Portugal land tenure system had some similarities to feudalism in the rest of Europe it was an blending of feudal and mozarabic and muslim systems. Additionally as the existing intro paragraph stands it seems address mostly to the 15 origianal captaincies on the South Am continent, does not takeinto account the many other Captaincies granted from time to time nor address royal captaincies. So, while I think no one else is currently working this or anything else in the history of colonial Brazil. I am going to insert my revision to this intro paragraph and won't feel slighted if someone reverts it.
