Needs clarification regarding abolishment and banning[edit]

The page begins with:

Capital punishment was abolished in Costa Rica in 1877. Costa Rica, one of many countries, banned capital punishment in 1882.

Please clarify the difference between what happened in 1877 and what happened in 1882.
