Name change[edit]

This twitter post, from bonafide Florida Today reporter James Dean, looks pretty solid. Looks like "Launch Complex 13" is going to get an official name change to "Landing Complex 1", as a part of the new leasee leasing the facility from the USAF. FlaToday tweet by James Dean. It was. And several sources supported the name change by about April or May, and the new sign put up by SpaceX. However, by December 2015, the time of the first planned landing attempt at the site, SpaceX had officially named the site Landing Zone 1. What do you think about moving the page to Cape Canaveral Landing Zone 1 or SpaceX Landing Zone 1? Also, I see on Twitter that they repainted the Landing Complex 1 sign to Landing Zone 1, can that picture from the tweet be used? Skrelk (talk) 23:27, 21 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I'm with you. The article will have to, ultimately, be moved to exist at some form of it's current name, as widely known, and in widest use.
My two cents: 1) because the (new, LZ-1) name is so new, a few days, then we don't really have the benefit of seeing/understanding how the common name shakes out. 2) there is a bunch of (serious) history on the years this facility was called "Space Launch Complex 13", and we will, ultimately, want to do justice in Wikipedia to that as well as honor the many persons who made that history happen.
So, my sense is that it might be best for someone to do a relaxed (not too fast) discussion and proposal here on this Talk page, and then eventually (a few weeks or so???) when a consensus is reached, we can rename the page, or split the page into two, or whatever else the consensus participants can agree on. Hmm I think I came here too late - and I should say that I don't really like the name change done as is, because people who were looking for its past history might be confused at the article title and may thought that they were looking for the wrong place. Proposed split[edit]

I feel that changing the name of the article so hastily without re-organizing the article isn't a good decision.

- The current lead doesn't even mention the full name of SLC-13 in full, which means that (for example) if people come in to try to find out the history of the place where the Lunar Orbiter series left Earth, that person will be very confused when looking at the article if he/she doesn't know much about SpaceX. In fact, I feel that the current article is too SpaceX-centric and does an injustice to the original history of the launch site.

- Given that the site has two different functions in the past and present (unlike, say, the Cape's SLC-37 where its function is launching rockets both in the past and present), I would say that it would be best to split the articles into two - leaving the original history in the 1960s/70s here (and rename the article back to CCAFS SLC-13, to prevent any interlinking problem), and turn the LZ-1 part into a new article. I feel that there would be enough material around to make two articles without having to clutter them together and confuse people all around. This can also be done when the new pad at Vandenberg AFB (SLC-4W) opens as early as next month.

  • SUPPORT the split. As I expressed aove, before this article was renamed, I suspected that a rapid move would cause some issues. SLC 13 has a worthy and notable long history, and is justified having an article by WP:GNG. That article would then, necessarily, have an historical tone, and would include a brief summary of what it became/morphed to in 2015. (e.g., "SLC 13 ... existed 1956–early 2015, after which it was leased to SpaceX, renamed Landing Zone 1, and reconfigured to support vertical landings of rocket first stages from the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy launch vehicles." etc. The LZ1 article would, then, be shorter and more about the current instantiation of facilities and its current purpose as an LZ for SpaceX, with a summary/overview of its earlier history as CCAFS SLC 13.
