National Trust pilot[edit]

Hello! During late June, July and some of August, I'm working on a paid project sponsored by the National Trust to review and enhance coverage of NT sites. You can find the pilot edits here, as well as a statement and contact details for the National Trust. The second stage of the project, after an assessment period, is to try to address missing references on the pages for some of the Top-10-most-visited properties, of which Calke Abbey is one. I hope to start this work shortly, but please do let me know if you have any concerns. Lajmmoore (talk) 17:21, 4 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

American heir?[edit]

The second paragraph of the National Trust section is puzzling. It’s been there for over a decade, added by User talk:LimeyDi in 2010. But its single source doesn’t work, and its phrasing is odd. Calke wasn’t given to the Trust due to lack of an heir, it was given in lieu of death duties, which the family couldn’t otherwise afford. Does anyone have any RS for this? KJP1 (talk) 06:14, 31 July 2022 (UTC) Further to KJP1's comment:[reply]

  • I removed this paragraph from the page, since the sources aren't reliable enough for inclusion in the main article.
    • "Some years after Calke was handed over to the National Trust to settle death duties, an heir was discovered: Andrew Johnson, a distant cousin of the Harpur family. Johnson was a wealthy resident of Vermont and the owner of important stands of timber and of a lumber business, though the Daily Mirror in Britain referred to him as a "lumberjack". Johnson was given the use of an apartment in the Abbey, which he and his family have used on occasional visits."
  • Perhaps another editor can find other sources to support the information, and return it to the NT section? As part of the pilot, I spoke to a staff member, who clarified that the family now stay in an estate cottage, but that as far as they knew this information wasn't available in published sources. Many thanks Lajmmoore (talk) 10:14, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I think that’s right. Looking for sources, I can’t find any strong ones, and many of the blog-type are clearly copied from here. We know with certainty that Calke didn’t pass to the Trust through lack of an heir, as the transfer was arranged by Charles’ brother Henry, the very obvious heir. I think there is confusion with later events; the unmarried and childless Airmyne Harpur-Crewe died in 1999,[1] and some, less than RS, sources suggest it was at that point that an heir in the US was located. But by then Calke Abbey had passed out of the family’s hands, although it is conceivable that parts of the estate were retained. Flickr’s definitely not RS, but this interesting, [2]. Anyways, all OR. KJP1 (talk) 11:46, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
