New Text[edit]

This page lacks any interesting information. It is, in fact, disgustingly inadequate. I have therefore translated the Spanish language version of the page and will replace the text. The Spanish version is badly written and contains a decent amount of information I believe to be wrong. However, it is a much better starting point than the current page. It contains information about battles with the Inca and how they were waged and much other interesting information. All of this information has to be examined and corrected.

My translation also only consisted of one pass, so the use of English may not be correct and many sentences may be unclear. I will try to correct this in the future if no one else does, but I have already spent a few hours today working on it, and I do not plan to spend many more.

The Cañari, according to friends and books I have read, spoke at least 10 distinct regional accents. They resisted the Inca for years and possibly decades. They were warlike but matriarchal. They seem to claim that they were defeated by Inca treachery as opposed to the story given here. They were supposed to have worshipped the moon and built circular buildings. Incapirca ("Inca wall") has time measuring devices of carved rocks with holes that were filled with water and reflected astronomical objects at certain times -- basically, stone calendars. They also built differently than the Inca, using rounded river stones and mortar.

That is all I can recall off the top of my head right now. I hope someone with better resources can verify, improve, and/or expand all of this information. This is certainly and interesting subject -- especially in a world where "Inca" is rapidly coming to mean "indigenous South American".

Finished[edit]

I have finished adding the translation and links to the text. There are references to some of the statements on the Spanish page, but I have not copied or even looked at them. I have cleaned up the translation a little, but it is still riddled with errors and bad punctuation. I believe all of the colons and semi-colons can be removed. Spanish punctuation is quite different than English punctuation, and I am not interested in spending any more time correcting this article today. I hope this new version provides the impetus to expand this article. I, for one, have much more to learn about the Cañari and am looking forward to seeing where the article goes from here.

Cheers,

Combined[edit]

I have managed to marry the two articles to some degree. However, there still exist discrepancies. For instance, the original article credits Huayna Capac with the conquest of the Cañari territory. The Spanish page credits Túpac Yupanqui with this feat. Neither version seems to have any information about how long this conquest took. The Spanish version does not mention the intermarriage and intrigue that complimented the Inca military assault. This non-military aspect is nearly always included in the versions told in Ecuador and Perú. I hope the entry is more clear and interesting now.

Culture Section[edit]

I added a culture section with some of the things I learned at Ingapirca. I will try to upload photos of the astronomical device in the future. This section is ripe for expansion and correction and contradicts the male-dominated version from the Spanish page. This contradiction needs to be rectified.

Old article text[edit]

I'm moving this section here from the main article. -Uyvsdi (talk) 02:25, 4 May 2011 (UTC)Uyvsdi[reply]

Cañaris was a South American Indigenous tribe in central south Ecuador. Their greatest significance was the defense against numerous Incan armies for many years. Through wars and marriages, the Inca Empire conquered their territory under the lead of Huayna Capac to the north.

The tribe existed largely around the Tumebamba area. Due in part to Incan influence and mandate, Cañari construction reportedly rivaled that of the Incan capital, Cuzco. Of particular repute was the impressive and beautiful architecture of Tumebamba, which has often been referred to as the "second Cuzco."
