"CKBY" station[edit]

I remember that one of my bus drivers going to school somewhere between 1991-1994 listened to the radio station "CKBY", and I think there was a hot air balloon with these call letters being advertised as the main brand. CKBY-FM → CJET-FM – Now apparently this station swapped call signs with CJET-FM when the country/CityNews swap happened in December 2020, but the only source cited in the article itself is a Facebook page (social networks are not reliable sources). There may be other ways to corroborate this, but it appears the pages were not actually swapped. ViperSnake151 Talk 16:27, 9 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The CRTC wouldn't be much help when it comes to call signs, as it doesn't really have much of anything to do with those — the CRTC just regulates content, while the technical aspects of broadcasting are under the authority of Industry Canada, so the CRTC would have no record of a call sign change unless and until the stations come up for their next license renewals. That said, IC's Spectrum Management database does say that CKBY = 92.3 and CJET = 101.1, so it's technically confirmed in that sense — but since SMS handles searches internally without producing a distinct URL for the results page that could be linked as a reference, it doesn't solve the "footnoted to Facebook" problem. But what I can offer is that this verifies the format flip itself (although it doesn't address the call sign question), while the 2021 Canadian Country Music Awards included a nomination for Amanda Kingsland of CKBY-FM as Music Director of the Year and the 2022 Canadian Country Music Award nominations (which just came out a couple of weeks ago) include a nod for Wendy Boomer of CKBY-FM in the Best Radio Personality category, thus clearly verifying that the call sign CKBY-FM moved with the country format. This all floated past me without ever landing on my radar until this discussion, given that I don't work as much on radio stations in recent years, but I'm just going to fix all this right now instead of leaving it to simmer for a week or two.
