Map[edit]

This article needs an up-to-date borough map. Peter Horn 02:50, 5 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Name[edit]

Guys, Côte-des-Neiges means "Snow Hill." It is called that way because it *is* a giant hill. The "des Neiges" part comes from the name of the catholic parish, Notre Dame des Neiges (Our Lady of Snow, I guess). Similarly, the nearby Côte-Sainte-Catherine street is called that way because it is also a hill. This is a ... hilly town. Also, as far as I know, the neighbourhood is landlocked. Why would it be called a coast?

I know having the same word for "hill" and "coast" can be confusing, but I reckon the key is that one is from Canadian French and the other is from European French. I don't have the etymology in front of me, but it must be the same as many other words that have disappeared from France while staying on in various old colonies. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.5.117.11 (talk) 00:28, 3 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"The city in Montreal was founded in part by the Sulpiciens who named many roads and paths throughout Montreal. At the time, Côte-des-Neiges was a path that led to the Notre-Dame-des-Neiges village (named after the abbey Notre-Dame-des-Neiges and not for actual snow)" https://www.mtlblog.com/lifestyle/the-history-behind-montreals-borough-names Feldercarb (talk) 17:47, 28 August 2020 (UTC) I've been a bit curious about the name, and would like to see something added to the article[reply]

History of the district[edit]

I've happened across this impressive content-rich history of CdN:

  • "1698-1998 CÔTE-DES-NEIGES AU FIL DU TEMPS" (in French). La société du troisième centenaire de la Côte-des-Neiges 1698-1998. 6 July 2000. Retrieved 9 January 2012.

I believe this could be used to greatly expand this article, and have added one ref, from it. It's also been added as an External link. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 16:00, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
