Re-write pending[edit]

I shall be adding some information from - "The Late Dr. Burney's Library". The Times. 23 April 1818. p. 3. {{cite news}}: External link in |newspaper= (help) - over the next day or two as this includes a rather nice highlights list of what was considered important at the time, plus the purchase price of £13,500 funded by Government. THE LATE-DR. BURNEY'S LIBRARY.

..-.0....- The Committee of the House of Commons, who were directed to investigate the propriety of purchas-ing the library of the late Dr. Burney, have made a report, in which they strongly recommend the ac-quisition of so important an addition to the public stock of literature: they state, that the value of the , collection, as estimated by the most competent 1 *judges, viz. Messrs. Ellis, Baber, and Smith, of the British Museum, Mr. Richard Heber the great col-lector, the Rev. T. F. Dibdin, the Rev. J. Cleaver Banks, and Messrs. Payne and Evans, the well-known booksellers,is no less than14,5001., butthat the proprie-tor is content to take 13,5001.: they, therefore, deem the purchase to be reasonable, and such as Parlia-ment should order to be made; at the same time sug-gesting, that the annual grant to the Museum should for the time be suspended or reduced,in consideration of this valuable accession to its treasures. The Committee give unanswerable reasons for their re-commendation, as a great portion of the library is of a character and form which it would be almost hope-less to procure elsewhere. We have not room to enumerate all these curiosities in detail ; but we can-not omit to mention two or three of the most in-teresting. These are, 1st, the manuscript copy of Homer's Iliad, formerly belonging to Mr. Townley, supposed to he as old as the 14th century ; 2d, two beautiful copies of the Greek Gospels, of the I Othaud 12th eenthries ; 3d, a complete collection of the dramatic literature of Greece, including every frag-ment and every comment ; 4th, a series of English newspapers, amounting to 700 volumes, from the year 1603 to the present time; 5th, a collection con-sisting of hetwuen 300 and 400 volwiles quarto, C011.- tabling- materials for a history of tire stage from 1660 to the present time, and particulars relating to actors and dramatists ; and, lastly, a collection of portraits of actors, authors, commentators, and other learned persons, from the latter part of Elizabeth's reign to the present day, amounting in all to 7,000, 5,000 of which relate to the stage. 'chestarticles, as well as many others described in the report, are not to be (not from any other quarter, at least hi such complete condition, and some not at all. They are all well worthy of being deposited in the National Museum, partly as illustrious specimens of the taste, talents, and industry of one of the very first scholars which latter times at least have produced ; but chiefly as documents of the highest interest and importance to the advancement of ancient and modern literature.
