Untitled[edit]

I removed the WP:Stub categorization of this article because I updated it with a significant number of sources, added History and See Also sections, and updated the Controversy section with current information. No way do I think this article is finished, but I do think it is worthy of being labeled a WP:Article. Clearstreams17 (talk) 21:38, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

History[edit]

I don't understand some of your removals Student7? What is controversial about mentioning Bernie Sanders? It's well-known that he proposed the idea of univerisal availability while mayor of Burlington. Simplyfying the sentences does not necessarily make it more encyclopedia-like. Names in place and things articles are normally removed unless they are really key stuff. The initial manager who took it from vague concept to reality, maybe. Providing free anything for the masses not really a novel idea in itself. Can be mentioned in his bio I suppose. 1990 may be the first that some people heard of it. State-owned organizations are fairly common in Europe and maybe haven't changed since WW II in some countries. It probably never occured to some of them that capitalism could provide cable.
Anyway, this is about Burlington Telecom, the organization. Things just "happen." It is not a place to exalt people generally. BTW this is true of schools and towns and churches and other articles. You will find the same standard applied to them as well. Wikipedia sometimes collects past mayors (and hide them if there are too many! See Newport (city), Vermont). Exceptions for current elected people. Note that BT has only appointees. Wikipedia can collect former principals for schools. But the latest track hero doesn't get in there unless he's olympic material or something really exraordinary. Came across a national teacher of the year once. Couldn't keep him out. Great coaches with multi-year achievement are often thrown out to my surprise.
People-related stuff really belongs with their bios, though many of them are not sufficently notable to have their own article. Bernie Sanders is not in that category, however! :)
The idea is to have boundaries within an article and not to get into competition about people (egos). Once you start letting people in, all of the sudden there are a hundred people who think they should be there. Lose control of the article after awhile. We've had to exile "notables" to external articles to save place articles. Vermont is one such example.

I'll defer to your logic on Sen. Sanders Student7. My only thinking on his inclusion is that it adds a bit of notability to the article. Obviously, what is notable about BT is the fact that they were willing to build a community-wide fiber network without a clear economically-beneficial goal. They were pretty sure it would turn out profitable, and knew it would help the community in the long-run, but not everybody thought so. Once-mayor Sanders, and then of course Dr. Nulty, both thought the project was a money-maker, so I guess that's where I felt they fit in. Thanks for your well-reasoned explanation though. I think your in the right.
I will probably continue to add a little more to this article when I get a chance. Do you agree some of the court issues merit inclusion? It's not everyday a municipal entity wins against a corporation in America! I'll also try to expand some of the current event-issues with construction completion and leaving the fiber network open to competition. This seems like a good article to get my bearings on. The court issues are important! Wikipedia just loves controversy. It has saved many an article that was otherwise considered "too small" for the encyclopedia. So, good call on that one! And, in truth, it distinguishes from run-of-the mill activities, not that this one needed that, but it does help to distinguish it from others that are municipally owned.
