Pronunciation[edit]

Beefart says : For the benefit of the poor, benighted colonial types, can you please make it clear whether Bryn is pronounced BRIN or BRIAN? I suspect the former but it pays to consult the locals, who will have the pronunciation down to a tea... Bryn Gates[edit]

On google maps and elsewhere, I've seen this place referred to as Bryn Gates. What if any is the difference? Shouldn't this name be at least referenced in the article? \ Fnarf999 \ talk \ contribs \ 01:48, 10 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Edmund Arrowsmith[edit]

The article says his remains are buried at Bryn Hall but every reference I can find says his hand is at St. Oswald's Church. Could we get a reference here? This part of the article is very confusing. \ Fnarf999 \ talk \ contribs \ 01:51, 10 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Edmund Arrowsmith was hung, drawn and quartered at Lancaster Castle. His remains were brought back to Haydock and burned, however one hand was recovered from the fire and was given to Gerrard, who kept it. His hand is now within St.Oswalds church in Ashton in Makerfield. There are dozens of links to support this on the web. 80.192.242.187 20:22, 11 February 2007 (UTC) JemmyH.[reply]

It is BELIEVED by many that his remains were buried at Bryn Hall. A friends father now lives in Bryn Hall and has regular visits from nuns, who pray there because of this. There are no records to confirm the belief. 80.192.242.187 20:25, 11 February 2007 (UTC) JemmyH.[reply]

The 'current' Bryn Hall is NOT the original one. It does NOT remain there from the 14th century. It was totally rebuilt, on a different site some 400 yards from the original, in the early 1800's.

If Edmund Arrowsmiths remains were buried there (which recorded history states otherwise) they wouldn't be where the new Bryn Hall now is.

Also, in my opinion, Bryn should be part of the Ashton in Makerfield article. After all, Bryn is a part of Ashton in Makerfield. It has been recorded as a part of Ashton in Makerfield since records began and long before local councils started to claim authority over different areas.
