Why is the Girl Brown?[edit]

So this isn't a racist song, right?

No, it's not, but it does make sense to ask why the girl is brown. If the song is based on ring dances that originated in Jamaica "many centuries ago", then wouldn't (nearly) all the girls taking a turn in the ring be brown? Why not just say "a girl in the ring" or stick in some other adjective to fit the rhythm, such as "there's a quick girl in the ring..."Martindo (talk) 13:29, 21 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

“<beat of silence> girl in the ring; tra la la la la” doesn’t really work as a lyric. CharlesKiddell (talk) 18:25, 10 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I think in this case 'brown girl' is just an idiom of Jamaican speech. Nothing racist intended.. 90.250.188.86 (talk) 08:56, 21 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Lawsuit[edit]

It seems like the article has several different accounts of the lawsuit over the song's authorship. A seemingly reliable account that could be used to improve the description is available here. John M Baker (talk) 02:09, 16 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
