Earlier champions[edit]

Looks like there were various junior titles either claimed or awarded some years before 1922, some of which might be local. For example,

  • "William Mitchell, boy champion of the world" (Sheffield Daily Telegraph, 15 May 1872)
  • "Freddy Lawrence (the boy champion billiard player)" (Birmingham Daily Gazette, 9 October 1903)
  • "Master T. Newman the boy champion ... Newman already holds the cue and case presented by World of Billiards" (Leytonstone Express and Independent, 14 May 1904)
  • Advert in The World of Billiards (2 January 1907) for Tom Tothill "Real boy billiards champion, winner of boy's championship 1905")
  • Report of the boy's championship of London at Burroughes Hall, with E. Hoskins defeating Newman. (The World of Billiards (10 April 1907)

It seems unlikely that we will be able to get a comprehensive list of these, or what authority recognised them, so is it best just to have an introductory para mentioning that there were variou contests for similar titles before 1922?
