Steam crane builder?[edit]

Fairbairn patent design of curved platework jib, built by S&P, as they were local.
There's some argument over the details of this. Quite possibly it's Fairbairn "running gear" that was originally supplied in CKD form to S&P, who then built the frame for it. Very obviously it's of the "Fairbairn pattern" and there's a Stothert & Pitt maker's plate fastened to it. Andy Dingley (talk) 15:12, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Separate the railway from the museum in Wikipedia?[edit]

Shouldn't we separate the Industrial Museum from the Harbour Railway in Wikipedia, especially now that their destinies have diverged? They may have been united institutionally, but in the popular imagination you'd always refer to them separately, and hence, I think, they've always deserved separate WP entries. All the stuff about the museum would have to be past tense & would we be starting a new article on the Museum of Bristol (or whatever its finally going to be called). It might be better to leave the old museum stuff with the railway - otherwise we could end up with 3 articles & someone proposing a merge?— Rod talk 18:11, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think separate articles are a good idea, as effectively the railway and the museum were treated as separate entities for almost all purposes except within the organisational structure of Bristol museums. This organisational structure was probably largely because the railway on its own wouldn't otherwise quite fit anywhere logical within the local authority. Combining the management presumably also created some economies of scale in administration. Neither of these factors are relevant to Wikipedia. We currently have enough information about both topics for standalone articles, especially if the railway one were to take more of the history of harbour railways within Bristol. As for the new museum, the limited coverage currently required will fit quite happily on the article about the industrial museum, and I would suggest continuing to cover it there until such time as there is enough for a standalone article at some future point.   • Retarget inbound links to old title
  • Update articles to reference each other appropriately
  • Change old title to a dab page or add a hat note to the museum article

? rename or new article for M shed[edit]

With the "imminent" openiong of the M shed, do people think this article should be renamed & most of the existing put into a history section with a new section for the M shed or should a new article be created for the new museum (& appropriate links made between the two)?— Rod talk 10:10, 3 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what you are opposing as I asked a question rather than proposing anything, however what I hear is we need to start a new article. However should it be Museum of Bristol or M shed? M Shed is a little ambiguous, as it has been a warehouse and two different museums over time. However that's an issue for moves and redirects as we know more.
