Initial overview[edit]

This appears to be quite a wide-ranging, readable and comprehensive article. It is also well illustrated. It has taken some time to read through it a couple of times. Here are my initial comments, they are listed section by section, but I will leave the WP:lead until last; and at this point I have not checked any references. The article appears to be about GA level, but these points need some (minor) attention:

  • Boundaries - What are the three neighbouring local authorities that form Greater Bristol?
Claified and wiki-linked. Jezhotwells (talk) 14:33, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
 DonePyrotec (talk) 09:48, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • History -
  • The Floating Harbour is stated to have been developed around the Rive Avon, well yes but what about the River Frome. Presumably whoever wrote this is not familiar with the development of the Floating Harbour?
Reworded, clarified, cited. Jezhotwells (talk) 12:52, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
 DonePyrotec (talk) 09:48, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • The former St. Augustine's Abbey is mentioned as being converted into a Cathedral, yet there is no mention of the foundation of medieval abbey(ies)?
Reworded, note of founding, cited. Jezhotwells (talk) 12:52, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • The tobacco trade is mentioned, but there is no mention of wine and spirits - was Bristol not famous for two family firms?
Reworded, sorced. Jezhotwells (talk) 12:52, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • There is no indication of when the docks moved to Avonmouth.
Reworded, opening of Avonmouth & Prtbury dates added. Jezhotwells (talk) 12:52, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
 DonePyrotec (talk) 09:48, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • The article appears a bit out of date in respect of the "partial regeneration of the Broadmead shopping area"
Removed the word partial. Jezhotwells (talk) 12:52, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
 DonePyrotec (talk) 09:48, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Economy and industry
  • Tobacco is mentioned in respect of "cash on the nail" - which was quite interesting, but what about post-tobacco Bristol, its not mentioned, except for the name Tobacco Factory in the Arts section.
Clarified early trades, cited. Jezhotwells (talk) 12:52, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
 DonePyrotec (talk) 10:09, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Is Airbus still at Filton, I thought that GKN bought it (or part of it)?
Filton is headquarters of Airbus UK (cited). Jezhotwells (talk) 12:52, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK, but see also [1] - GKN bought part of the operations, its on the Airbus website.Pyrotec (talk) 17:58, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Removed morning Jezhotwells (talk) 12:52, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
 DonePyrotec (talk) 09:48, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

To be continued .....

Thanks for these intitial points pyrotec I will address these tomorrow. Jezhotwells (talk) 23:43, 19 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • History -
  • I think it was worth clarifying that the "slave Trade" was triangular - slaves from Africa to America, cargo from America to Bristol and cargo Bristol to Africa. I don't have a source for it (and I might not be entirely correct).Pyrotec (talk) 09:48, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have rewritten that section to clarify and cited. Jezhotwells (talk) 15:01, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
 DonePyrotec (talk) 17:12, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Economy and industry
  • There are three paras on aerospace at Filton, the first on "Bristols" the second on Concorde/RR and the third on BAE etc. The first really aught to mention that Bristol Aeroplane Co subsequently became part of BAe (later BAE Systems).Pyrotec (talk) 09:48, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Added material to show progression of companies by merger. Jezhotwells (talk) 15:15, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Arts-
  • The ref for finalist for the 2008 European Capital of Culture has a broken link.Pyrotec (talk) 09:48, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
found new link, the DCMS site has been reoganised. Jezhotwells (talk) 15:21, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
