Request edit[edit]

Dear editors, I would like to make the following edits to Brian McConaghy's wikipedia page to improve accuracy and add relevant, factual information. Please forgive my previous edits (which I have since reverted) as I was unaware of best practices and please do let me know if the following edits are acceptable and the reasons behind any that are not. Your support and assistance is greatly appreciated!

Change "He used to work for the Vancouver Forensic Laboratory as a firearm and tool-mark examination specialist" to "He worked for the Vancouver Forensic Laboratory as a firearm and tool-mark examination specialist for over 22 years" [1] [2]

Not done LinkedIn can't be used as a source.

Change "After founding Ratanak International, he continued to help the RCMP as a consultant, providing them with crucial information about the identity of the child sexual abuse victims in the case of Donald Bakker." to "During this time he received an RCMP Commissioners Commendation for his work to aid Cambodia, and a Vancouver Police Chief Constable's Commendation for his assistance investigating Donald Bakker – Canada's first extraterritorial conviction for child sex tourism. After leaving the RCMP in 2008 to focus on the development of Ratanak International’s work with the poor and exploited in Cambodia, he continued to assist the RCMP, and other police agencies, in the investigation of Canadians traveling to Cambodia to sexually assault children, by locating their crime scenes, identifying their child victims and providing associated court testimony.[3]"

Not done This is a primary source, which can't be used. Credible, independent publishers (press, books, scholarly works) written by people with no connection to the events are needed. Also, please see WP:BLPAWARDS for guidance on the acceptability of awards.

Add "Domestically McConaghy provided forensic analysis and court testimony on many firearms and toolmark related murder cases in addition to technical evidence regarding firearms operation and legal classification.[4]"

Not done This is a primary source and original research, which again can't be used. Acceptable secondary sources are things like press articles, scholarly works and books, as oppose to original source material.

Change "He also did forensic work on the women murdered by Robert Pickton,[7] testifying that Andrea Joesbury, Sereena Abotsway, and Mona Wilson had all been decapitated with a reciprocating saw.[8]" to "He was recognized by the RCMP for his extensive forensic examination of the women murdered by the serial killer Robert Pickton.[5] This included testimony that the methods of dismemberment of the various recovered body parts was consistent with the work of a single person familiar with butchery. McConaghy testified that Andrea Joesbury, Sereena Abotsway, Mona Wilson and another unidentified victim had all been decapitated with a reciprocating saw.[6]"

Not done The current version, that just describes the work done, as oppose to being recognized for it, is more neutral. If there is something erroneous about the current version, more explanation of what's wrong with it would help.

Add "He has testified before the Commons and Senate committees of Canada's Parliament in regards to a variety of human trafficking and prostitution legislation[7] and works with both Canadian and international government and international law enforcement regarding child protection issues."

Change "McConaghy was the guest speaker at the 2011 Manitoba Prayer Breakfast.[9]" to "He has been the guest speaker at the 2007 British Columbia and 2011 Manitoba, Prayer Breakfasts[8] and the 2014 National Prayer Breakfast Dinner."

Add: Ratanak International has expanded to other countries. McConaghy currently sits on the boards of Ratanak International, Canada, United Kingdom, USA and Australia.

Response[edit]

Hi. I've started vetting through this, but almost all of the proposed content is based on original source material and primary sources. Wikipedia articles are based primarily on secondary, credible, independent sources, like press articles, books, and scholarly works. To be a secondary source, the author should have no direct connection to the events being described and they should not be describing something that they themselves witnessed. In many fields, primary sources and original research are cherished and considered ideal, but on Wikipedia our rule is to rely on secondary sources. Hope this clears things up.
