Levy states that nothing was more central to the American industrial order than the breadwinner ideal--not even factories. The American Federation of Labor adopted a politics of male breadwinning. This new model was a response to the problem, according to Levy, of "how might commerce be promoted, yet still be checked and kept within its proper bounds?” However, the North and South didn't agree on this new cultural ideal and it contributed to sectional political strife.
