Language[edit]

I have tried to re-work the spelling and grammar of the piece which I hope is improved. However, though it is good to have an article full of information, it is pretty intensive. More importantly, it is VERY hard to just "dip" into the article, so if someone could attempt to fix this it would be great.--Brigade Piron (talk) 20:58, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Etymology?[edit]

I expected some explanation of the name "Bosporan"...is this country named after a person or place? There is nothing in this entry that explains the name of the kingdom. 69.125.134.86 (talk) 14:50, 16 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The "Bosp[h]oran" part refers to the gulf between the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea on the far west of the Crimea where the kingdom was based.--Brigade Piron (talk) 17:44, 16 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The article states that the Cimmerian Bosporus is not named after the Bosporus. As an assertion (a highly questionable one, I think), this should give a source. The fact is that "Bosporus" means "cow crossing" in ancient Greek, referring to the story of Io crossing from Europe into Asia. The ancients assigned the Bosporus as that location. But I am pretty sure they noticed the similarity of the Cimmerian Bosporus, and named it accordingly, like, "The OTHER Bosporus". However, I DO NOT CLAIM TO HAVE A SOURCE! At the very least, we can guess that they said, "Hey, here's another place she might have crossed!" But I am not putting original research or speculation into Wikipedia, and neither should the editor who claimed without a source that it was not named for the Bosporus. In all probability, it was, and there may be an extant source somewhere. I am deleting the claim. Taquito1 (talk) 14:23, 14 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Today?[edit]

Half of it is recognized bye the world outside Russia as a part of Ukraine and half of it as a part of Russia. Russia claims it all since a few months. According to different sources (old and contemporary maps confirm this, including some in the wiki page of the actual Roman Empire), this entity did reach mainland Ukraine, and -- here's where I would like to add: Should the Donetsk People's Republic be taken into account in the today section? Seeing that it used to occupy that area as well (and the "country" still exists to this day). 180app (talk) 02:00, 20 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Jewish section[edit]

There was a paragraph in the section covering the Byzantine period that referred to Jewish history in a mixed up historic mash of Roman and early-Medeival periods: The event of the 'Jewish Diaspora' was a Roman event, and the Khazars link to Judaism was about eight hundred years later, and then the paragraph skipped back to discuss a sect of the First century CE. What I did, provisionally, was to remove the reference to the Khazars from that paragraph, since that is definitely out of place historically, and move the paragraph to its chronological position within the Roman history section.

There really should be further discussion of the Khazar influence and contribution to this history, but that requires research and sourcing that isn't currently in the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.6.168.221 (talk) 22:28, 25 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
