Shropshire[edit]

I'm sorry but it's in Shropshire. It has a Staffordshire postal address - that's all. It is listed as a Shropshire site by English Heritage. It's also clearly shown as being on the Shropshire side of the boundary by OS maps. Check on any site that uses them. It never was in Staffordshire. It was an anomaly for many centuries, excluded from the parish and county system altogether. But it is now definitely in Shropshire. I'll give it a few days for anyone to find any serious argument to the contrary, then it's being changed back.Sjwells53 (talk) 21:09, 22 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Etymology[edit]

Original text: "The name is also clearly reminiscent of the Norman ancestor of the Giffard family, Osborn or Osbern de Bolebec, count of Longueville, and may be a deliberate verbal play[citation needed]."

There's been a demand for a reference on the Bolebec connection for some time. Blount et al were hardly likely to explain the jest, as it was a bit precious and not greatly improved by a laboured explanation, especially as most 17th century gentry hearers would simply get it straight away. If I told you my dog had no nose, your enjoyment of what followed would not be greatly enhanced by pointing out that it hinges on an ambiguity introduced by a verb that has transitive and intransitive uses. Jokes are generally a bit fragile when examined closely.

I've sought a rewording that evades the need for a citation of the joke. You're free to reverse it if you think I'm cheating.Sjwells53 (talk) 12:17, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
