Besides the meaning explained in the article, the noun borgo can also refer to a simple city neighborhood, especially when it comes to a historical neighborhood that was originally out of the walls of the old town. Nowadays, these borghi (plural of borgo) are actually within the town or city boundaries and not out of them (unlike frazioni, for example); in this particular case, the meaning of borgo is very close to the word quartiere or rione, at least in everyday Italian language (a variant is borgata).
