Introduction[edit]

I don't know much about the bible/tanakh, etc/, and Wikipedia is my main sources for this. This article has no introductory paragraph. What compilations is it included in, etc.? Radio prophecy?[edit]

I found a reference in a book of bible facts (Is That in the Bible? by Charles Francis Potter (1942 ed.)) that mentions that Zephaniah 1:10 was once held to be a prophecy about radio. Can anyone confirm/deny this? --Auric The Rad 03:36, July 18, 2005 (UTC)

Names of God in Judaism[edit]

The name of God in the Hebrew Old Testament was holy and has been given expressions in the English language that have included LORD or Yahweh or Jehovah or the Tetragrammaton. These were written as expressions for the Hebraic expression of YHWH. Recent edits removed Yahweh and introduced Hashem. Yahweh is a term for the holy, Hebrew name of God that was commonly used in The Jerusalem Bible and other contexts. See Names of God in Judaism for more information. In the article, it states that Hashem is a more casual or colloquial term for the name of God. For now, I recommend retaining the work of others that includes Yahweh or Tetragrammaton or Hashem or other legitimate names. Wikipedia grows when others share and add new knowledge and information. I recommend this over editing the text of others and switching names that can then be switched again by others. Adonai, Elohim and Yah are other common expressions of the Hebraic YHWH.

Ethiopians?[edit]

Could we have some proof that the name given for the father of Zephaniah means Ethiopian? As for the prophecies against the Ethiopians, is this not a code word for Egyptians, who were considerably closer to Jerusalem? --Hors-la-loi (talk) 18:19, 17 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The editor above suggests that Cush == Egypt (rather than Ethiopia) because Ethiopia is too far away?? It is quite clear that there was a "Cush"/Kush that is the Southern/upstream part of the Nile (i.e. Egypt) that had various relations/associations with Lower Egypt at various times. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_of_Kush . As to whether this biblical Cush is synonymous with "Ethiopia"... I think the editor above is confused by today's boundaries of Ethiopia which of course did not exist at the time. The historical boundaries of Ethiopia (the Kingdom of "Abyssinia") certainly includes territory which Zephaniah would plausibly prophesy about. http://www.biblestudytools.com/dictionary/cush/ Does the editor above also suggest that Sheba must also be Egypt, because Ethiopia is "too far away"??
