Order of battle[edit]

What is the source for this listing? For what it's worth, "Mariner's Mirror" (1941) has an article that lists the schooner Express but not Satellite, Saracen, or Jasper. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 14.200.17.52 (talk) 13:14, 27 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How do we want to deal with the fact that Saracen at least was not in the order of battle? Even James states that she remained behind at Gibraltar, though he is wrong on that as was in Bermuda at the time. Whatever we do, we need to do it in a way that ensures that in the future someone who finds James' listing doesn't re-insert her name. Incidentally, it looks like the Mariner's Mirror article is correct. Saracen wasn't there, and Satelite and Jasper only got as far as Gibraltar.Acad Ronin (talk) 12:30, 16 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Two ways, either put in a foot note to state that James is mistaken in including them (with refs), or a hidden note (enclosed within <!-- Note --> which will only be seen if someone edits the article. I would suggest the first as preferable as it is open and explains even to non-editors the situation. Dabbler (talk) 14:30, 16 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. That's roughly what I have done. It is tricky to find references that comment on the absence of something that shouldn't be there. However, I will try and track down the Mariner's Mirror article and use it to build out my existing note.Acad Ronin (talk) 15:20, 16 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

French frigate Ciotat[edit]

Hello,

None of the usual reference lists (Demerliac and Roche) for the French Navy mentions a frigate Ciotat, and I can hardly imagine a 40-gun frigate escaping their attention. Can we trace where this information come from, in the hope of clarifying the matter?

Cheers! Rama (talk) 05:31, 16 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed Ciotat from the order of battle. The description of her as a 40-gun French frigate comes from James. Other sources refer to her as a gabarre or a corvette. There is no mention of her taking part in the battle. The gabarre is mentioned in the letter: [1].Acad Ronin (talk) 11:12, 16 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
