Article[edit]

I wrote essentially "Boathouse Row is a row of boathouses", which seems pretty lame. Should we add "of course" or "as the name implies"? BillFlis 12:52, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There is a nice history of the place here with great ref.

Image[edit]

  • I put a request on the Wikipedia image request page for a better photo. THis overhead does it no justice. People from Philly know what the photo I am talking about. Something from eye level that shows the houses and the river. The normal, iconic shot that you always see. Maybe taken at night?--Looper5920 07:05, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • The West River Drive photo. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 07:31, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • The overhead image is a blatant copyvio from Google Maps. If someone can find me the exact lat/long for this location then I can hopefully produce a genuinely public-domain aerial photo from PD USGS sources - but I don't know Philly at all, so I'm having trouble locating the exact area. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 20:21, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      • Declassified NRO KH-11 imagery of Boathouse Row
Unfortunately the USGS haven't released the aerial datastream for Philiadelphia and environs. I've uploaded older (blockier, monochrome) KH-11 imagery (right). It's not terribly pretty, so I've not immediately put it into the article. If someone thinks it's worthwhile, please put it in. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 20:40, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
        • Good catch. I agree the monochrome isn't very pretty (but thanks for taking the trouble to find it). Honestly, I don't know that even a really good overhead image adds that much to the article...I imagine it only ended up being used for lack of anything better (the ground photo that's in use now is a new addition). -- JVinocur 02:13, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
          • I just took two pictures tonight of boat house row from West River Drive, I am going to upload them both onto Wikipedia either now or tomorrow, depending on whether I can figure out exactly what to do. MBob 05:25, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
            • Correction, only one of the pictures looked good, the second was blurrier than I had originally thought so I am not going to upload it, but I hope that satisfies what you were looking for. MBob 05:42, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
              • Err, it's a nice picture, but I'm a little confused about the copyright status. If you took the picture yourself, you'll need to release it under a more free license than that. If not, we'll probably have to take it down; I don't think you can make a fair use case for this.  — JVinocur (talk • contribs) 13:00, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
                • Actually the photo that I took and put up was taken down about 2 hours later by another person who added the current picture, which is the picture that I am assuming you are talking about when you say that there could be a fair use issue. Which I would agree with, I am not so sure that the picture is being used correctly. MBob 21:43, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
                  • I have commented out the image with questionable license and restored the image by MBob. I doubt we can claim fair use with Image:12.BoathouseRow2-R.KennedyG.jpg and I have listed it on Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images to try and resolve the issue. johnSLADE (talk) 23:28, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
                    • MBob, sorry for questioning you about an image that wasn't yours. I like your image -- not so artistic, perhaps, but realism is more appropriate for an encyclopedia anyway. I went ahead and cropped it (plus some other mild tweaking); I hope you like the new look.  — JVinocur (talk • contribs) 00:24, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
                  • The uploader of the other image has chosen to discuss these issues on User talk:JVinocur#Boathouse Row instead of here. I hope some people will come join the discussion (and watch the edits made to the page itself as well as the two images in question) so a community consensus can be reached.  — JVinocur (talk • contribs) 12:13, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
