Musicians/Members dispute

In response to Sergecross73: 24 August 2012‎ "I'd understand the sentiment if they collaborated alot, but I don't believe they do at this point. Doesn't seem right to call Wilson "Former" when he's singing/playing on several tracks and mastering the album too...."

First of all, Wilson is specifically quoted and sourced in the article saying he is currently not a member, but a guest. Second, who do you mean by "they"? Just to be clear I'm not saying necessarily I think I'm right and you're wrong, just that it seems silly to me that Blackfield should not be considered to have members. At the very least Steven and Aviv (or I suppose just Aviv now) should be considered member(s) imo. Then again, though, countless bands have members who never contribute to writing and yet are still considered members, but now I'm just kind of arguing with myself so I'll leave it open for discussion now. --68.46.2.4 (talk) 03:12, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

Well, from what I've gathered, just about everyone contributing to Blackfield outside of Wilson and Geffen, are merely studio/live musicians. Wilson and Geffen do virtually everything as far as making the music goes. They write all the lyrics, compose and arrange all the songs, etc. Everyone else just does does what they're told, and show up at live gigs, like studio/live musicians. That's why you never hear anything along the lines "Yeah, Seffy Efrati really took the song in a new direction with the bass line he came up with in Song X" or "Tomer Z wrote the lyrics for Song Y". That's why, to me, it's weird to call them members.

To me, it seems like the equivalent to saying "Person X is a member of Lenny Kravitz." Sure, he probably has a guy who drums for him, but you don't really call him a "member". Blackfield is more of a "collaboration" than a "band" per se. Sergecross73 msg me 03:36, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

But Lenny Kravitz is a person, not a project. Such confusion is prevalent in industrial music, for example Marilyn Manson refers to both a person and a band. A better example yet would be Nine Inch Nails which is unquestionably a project, not a band, but if you look at its article it does have members/past members in the info box. I feel like in the case of Blackfield, while we can fruitlessly argue the semantics of band vs. project (although Aviv has referred to it as a band and I'm pretty sure Wilson has too) by the standard of Nine Inch Nails having members, Blackfield does too. --68.46.2.4 (talk) 04:23, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

You make some good points, but I'm still not quite on board to what you were changing it to either. I think perhaps the part I'm more hung up on is calling Wilson "former", while he's still working with Geffen, helping with the direction of the music, the mastering album, and "preserving the legacy and sound", (per the sources in the article) while the guy who comes in, plays bass in 10 songs that are already fully developed, and is on his way, is shown as an "active member". I don't think that portrays the band and their roles accurrately. It is hard to tell though, since they haven't said much as of late. Hopefully it'll become more clear once the 4th album is assumably promoted more closer to release... Sergecross73 msg me 13:23, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

New Prog

Should Blackfield really be put under "New prog"?. They don't really seem to incorporate prog elements into their music. They seem more like an "Art rock" band. Zanders5k 19:41, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

Blackfield 5

@Sergecross73:I removed the reference as there appears to be a danger of that section becoming a running commentary of the entire recording process. I mean, if we include a reference to a picture then the following from November 27 should perhaps be included too:

Would it perhaps not be better if there was a third-party source for all this? I mean, in general we do not include news about an upcoming album/release until a name and date has been confirmed. Karst (talk) 14:53, 8 December 2015 (UTC)

First party sources are okay for confirming basic details like this. Third party sources are preferred, but if first party is all we've got, then it's fine. It'd be one thing if it was just a picture with no caption posted, and people were speculating that it was related to Blackfield or something, but the source is very direct in what it is saying, and the content in the article directly correlates with that. And I'd support adding the above information (in prose form) as well - we don't want to write a play by play account of every time they say the word "Blackfield", but we're currently at "1 sentence", about a Blackfield 5, looking to expand to 2-3 sentences with the source above - that's hardly an excessive account of the band's current status for the year.
