Conversion from dab to redirect[edit]

This page (Blackbird) has just been converted from a dab to a redirect. Previously we had Blackbird as a dab for birds and Blackbird (disambiguation) as a separate dab for other uses. We now have the birds added to Blackbird (disambiguation), leaving Blackbird as a redirect to Common Blackbird.

I do agree that the two dabs should be merged – I can see no reason to keep them separate. However, I don't understand the logic of the current arrangement. Surely we should have Blackbird as the dab? Blackbird (disambiguation) would be a redirect to that. Although for me (as a Brit) that bird is indeed "the" blackbird, there are several other strong uses, and I doubt if the majority of users would share my primary usage. (Incidentally our local blackbirds have recently decided it's spring, and I can hear one singing outside at this moment.) Richard New Forest (talk) 15:56, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Richard, any objection to move Blackbird (disambiguation) to Blackbird as most links are for the birds anyway? Link should lead if it's a synonym[edit]

Regarding the entry for the Aero A.34: There are three relevant guidlelines in MOS:DAB: 1) "The link should be the first word or phrase in each entry." 2) "If the link is to a synonym, simply use it as it is named". 3) "If a topic does not have an article of its own, but is mentioned within another article, then a link to that article should be included. In this case, the link does not start the line, but it should still be the only blue wikilink." In short, if the link matches or is a synonym for the dabbed term, it should lead; if the dabbed term is discussed within a larger topic, only then does the link come later in the entry. In the case of Aero A.34, "Blackbird" is not a component or subtopic, it is another name for (i.e. a synonym for) the aircraft, so the link goes first.--ShelfSkewed Talk 05:44, 11 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
