When the two are in the kitchen, whe she says she doesn't know how to cook and how she swears a lot, Jackson says "I ain't on ya Ricci (richie?)" calling her by her real name.

It would appear that the synopsis is taken whole from Movie Spoiler. Not sure what the copyright status is of stuff from The Movie Spoiler is, but this is probably a violation. Location[edit]

I'm not sure this film is set in TN. Ricci's character mentions something about moving up north to Knoxville, which gave me the impression that they were in GA or AL.

The film appears to have been filmed in Stanton, TN (NE of Memphis) as evidenced by the Stanton Water Tower in one scene. Additionally, Tennessee license plates are visible on several vehicles. Adding to the Controversy section[edit]

It seems that the Director Craig Brewer was instrumental in creating the trailer and posters as a homage to exploitation and pulp movies of a bygone era. The movie is a love story of sorts and a very good one. It is about love of music, love of self and love of another. None of these aspects are represented in the marketing of the film, which solely hinges on sex and titillation.

The DVD cover for 'Black Snake Moan' has been toned down somewhat but it still carries the stigma of the original campaign.

Craig Brewer talked about the pulp aspects of 'Black Snake Moan' and the poster for the film.

Craig Brewer : I know the poster kind of gives it a pulp feel, which is exactly what I wanted it to do. The movies I am attracted to like Baby Doll and A Streetcar Named Desire, these are movie posters with passion on the front, taboo imagery.

You look at the poster for Baby Doll and it’s got Carroll Baker looking gorgeous but she’s in a baby crib and she can barely even sit in it, her bare legs are hanging off the side of it and you’re kind of like God that looks so exciting, should I be this excited about this? You know? I don’t know if it is right for me to be excited about this.

Well look at Sam Jackson’s character in the poster, and you look at Christina Ricci’s character in the poster and you think Wow, that’s wrong and man she looks good and he is all sweaty. There is something both terrifying and titillating about it. The movie poster is not incorrect necessarily.

Ricci: The way that movie was marketed was probably one of the most disappointing and upsetting things that’s ever happened to me in my career. I have no interest in exploiting women any further than they’ve already been exploited.

The whole reason I made that movie was to say, ‘Oh yeah, that girl you called a slut probably went through this, so you might not want to use her and throw her away or judge her. All they (marketing bosses) cared about was college-age boys going to see it.

Actor Samuel L. Jackson blamed studio bosses for the lukewarm response that 'Black Snake Moan' received at the box office.

Jackson: The movie didn't make a lot of money but people discovered it on DVD and found out that it's not really a movie about me making Christina Ricci my slave. They (studio bosses) sort of made it look like she was my little sex slave; she had a little torn shirt on and a big chain... It didn't quite work out as well as we wanted it to.

Even if we do, the sentence is nonsensical. To "leave someone for dead" is to leave someone to die - to abandon them with the belief that their death is imminent. Sexual Abuse[edit]

I think this film was very good it made me get very emotional ! Black men are often portrayed negatively with white women but I feel Samual Jackson was everso caring and it was a change for a black mans wife to be unfaithful as she left him. Also he was so good caring for Rae as she was called, Christina Ricci I felt is a wonderful actress and I think she was great acting, The sexual abuse is mostly a common factor in promiscuity, it is also the attention seeking and nymphomaniac ways that are often behaviours seen in abuse victims. It s beautiful story and I felt very powerful as it shows the damage sexual abuse does to a person. Working with survivors of abuse I suppose that’s why I’m very opinionated about this topic. I feel the film is underrated and misunderstood!! It’s sad as it’s hard hitting in showing the scars sex abuse victims suffer as well as a positive ending as the partner Justin timberlake had also got some anxiety disorder which can stem from suffering , I feel this was greatly underlooked or discussed in the reviews. This film should be a positive example of anxiety disorders, maybe PTSD POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER MAYBE FROM Army work. As well AS SEXUAL ABUSE , and negative life behaviour that’s caused from ABUSE. It main ethos should have been that victims can overcome there suffering and scars with support and tender loving care. At the end the love between Justin and Christine the army partner of Rae are off married and happily together being ever so supportive together. So this is a happy ending. As I’m not a movie critic I can’t explain it but there is a slight comical feel to the film, like black humour but perhaps thus is why is been reviewed badly .
