Grading debate[edit]

Many of these grades are traditional which can mean that the climbing can be more awkward than you might expect.

This doesn't make a lot of sense -- I presume you don't mean the grades are traditional grades, as that would be expected at this sort of crag, but rather that the grades are historical in some sense? Either way, many of the climbs at Birchen are something of a soft touch for the grade, so I'm still not sure I believe you :) MichaelHudson 13:33, 25 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

There are at two well-known sets of grades for Birchen: those in Paul Nunn's Rock Climbing in the Peak District, which in a few cases understate the difficulty; and those in the BMC's Chatsworth guidebook (and reprinted in On Peak Rock) which in many cases overstate the difficulty. Maybe the writer was thinking of the Paul Nunn grades? But yes, it's unclear and should be rewritten. Gdr 16:36, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well, there's even more than that because there's the RockFax Eastern Grit guide as well (which overstates the grades in places, just to complete the balance or something). Anyway, as you say it should probably just be rewritten. Maybe I'll do that eventually... MichaelHudson 13:13, 11 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
