Confused about the affix of "Sr."[edit]

Bryson's son's full name is William McGuire Bryson. The article lists the elder Bryson's middle name as Eugene. Is it not necessary for a father and son to share a middle name as well as a first and last name in order for them to be referred to as "Sr." and "Jr."? (Bill Bryson's article does not refer to him as a "Jr.").
