No Solidarity Crisis? No 1983 election?[edit]

I came looking for the election date and the budget date for the Canada in 1983 update; which also didn't mention the Solidarity Crisis; I've begun the framework but I guess I'll have to look elsewhere for the dates (on the web). Intent is also to write a Solidarity (British Columbia) article; so far I've written about the April 1-5 interregnum and the election (think it was the 30th of the same month, April). Full story of election results and methods, behaviour by and attitudes towards Bennett that spring, the booby-trap of "governing with restraint"; there's obviously a parallel Restraint Budget to be writtten, as well as Kelowna Accord (whatever that was, and nobody still knows). I can't believe that someone could write a bio of Bennett and not HAVE to include the Solidarity Summer and the April 1 interregnum (a major constitutional action by an L-G, by the way). Order of Canada[edit]

Securities Charges[edit]

This article is incomplete without references to Mr Bennett's acquittal on insider trading criminal charges and the investigation of the securities commission which penalized him for using insider information involving Doman Industries in his stock transactions. B.C.Social Credit League vs. British Columbia Social Credit Party[edit]

The official name of the party was "League" from its founding ca. 1949 until the 1974 convention when the name was officially changed, so perhaps capital-L League would be better in reference to 1973.Chris. Fulker 15:08, 25 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I can't remember how and when the decision was made, but in the Cdn Elections Wikiproject when we built the colour-coding for the tables on the various riding and elections pages, the colours for the old Social Credit League and other Socred precurosr organizations were all given the same code as Social Credit as such; I raised the nomenclature issue becuase pre-1952 and post-1952 mean such different things in terms of who and what the party was; but as you point out one of the Socred-fringe groups names survived as the main party name until 1973. I'm not sure what to do about that either, partly because of the importance of 1952 (the Bennett Socreds, vs the original fringe Socreds) and the technical/formal blip in 1973 (which, it should also be pointed out, was also the new element in the party breaking some of its ties with the old true-blue Socreds to prep for the advent of Miniwac two years later). Anyway, I'm open to suggestions; I never did like the vagueness of the old lumped-together codes; but now that the 1973 name-change thing has been pointed out it complicates matters even futher.....19:13, 25 December 2006 (UTC)

So? WP:Be bold. I agree there could be lots more on him, but the same is true of bios of any other Premier, and online sources are a problem, as most news copy on him is now in pay-for archives. As for why he got out when he did, suffice to say he got out while the going was good; at the time the atmosphere of Expo and the opening of SkyTrain and having survived the Solidarity Crisis (by help from the media shoving it into history's dustbin), plan was at the time, so the columnists said, to leave in a seeming blaze of glory. The flip side of the story was the verdict from the Securities Commission on the Doman Scandal was due later that year, and although it came out sort-of-OK for the ex-Premier, the political impact of a sitting Premier indicted for criminal insider trading would have killed the Social Credit Party a few years before that eventuality came about anyway; as per usual in BC politics, that he was under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission was not grounds for resignation, although in a truly British system it would be; he is now portrayed as an "elder statesman".....and from a maybe-personal end, the stresses of the job of BC Premier are no doubt horrendous; this being on of the more poisoned political arenas on the continent; ten years in power was more than enough, get out while you're still young and able to enjoy life; 20 years in office exhausted his father and no doubt contributed to the elder Bennett's eventual death. I think, in fact, this is in one of the bios written about him, I remember it from a review of the bio. Suffice to say that there was and is a lot of dirt swirling around the BC government at all times, adn Bill Bennett was muddied with a whole bunch of it, despite the latter-day positive presskit; getting out during the halcyon days of Expo was a wise thing to do, and because of the SEC investigation, probably very wise....Skookum1 (talk) 18:24, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV tag[edit]

I placed the NPOV tag on this paragraph:

"Inspired by conservative economist Milton Friedman, his government passed a series of laws, known as the "Restraint" program, which slashed social services and gutted labour laws in response to economic woes in 1983, provoking a general strike which further crippled the economy. To justify massive education cuts, Bennett blamed many of the province's difficulties squarely on the shoulders of public school teachers, an argument that deeply split the electorate."

The first sentence is a perfect example of loaded language. I don't know enough about why Bennet made desicions like that for BC... and there are no citations for any of that. Please edit so that it reflects an NPOV... or at least attempts to.
