Tone of the article[edit]

I think the tone of this page is entirely appropriate. Historical, professional, no problems. People from Bethesda Orphanage can contribute other useful information, and it will balance out any extreme opinions. I would like to see more pages like this. Jenna5 07:29, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I tend to disagree. In fact, I believe this violates NPOV. Look at these sentences:
"Benjamin Franklin said that because of the scarcity of workmen and materials in Georgia, it would have been better to have built the orphanage in Philadelphia and moved the children there! However, Whitefield remained faithful to his contributors, who had given money specifically for the Georgia project."
The exclamation mark implies that B. Franklin was wrong, while Whitefield was right, which is a personal opinion that doesn't belong in an article. What do you think, Jenna? Puchiko (talk • contribs • email) 22:23, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the exclamation point and revised some of the colloquial language, so I think this article is as crisp as it's going to get without someone doing a substantial overhaul with new information and rewrites. Regardless of whether Franklin's opinions were right or wrong, encyclopedia entries should just be stating the facts and, like most professional writing, should not be peppered with exclamation points. RACIST WHITE MAN[edit]

I am incensed by the rubbish in this article. First of all to clear away the rubble I am white and I was born in Gloucester, England (same as Whitfield) and I know the location where Whitfield was born. Second, I have lived over half my life in the USA, but right now I am in the UK and an African-American friend is watching over my home. Why do I write this? Because Whitfield actually campaigned to reintroduce slavery to fund his wretched orphanage! Not only that, he succeeded! So before prancing along with the article let us be clear that enslaved Africans were propping it up - not only that, but they were enslaved by this miserable SOB who owned them after getting the law changed. Why? Because in the name of his god he preached that Africans were not human beings in the same way that Europeans are. This article is an outrage for what it does not say. It needs to be rewritten. For starters just link it to the George Whitfield article on Wikipedia which will immediately reveal Whitfield as a "racist white man". 80.192.68.143 (talk) 11:57, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Article rename?[edit]

Bethesda Home for Boys was officially renamed Bethesda Academy in April 2011. Should the article name be changed to reflect this? Bleaney (talk) 17:16, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Tone of article revisited[edit]

The tone is still rather worshipful, and some of the early history text sounds like it was taken from a promotional brochure. I've inserted a section about Bethesda and slavery, with citations; and hope others will continue to help. --Orange Mike | Talk 23:23, 31 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
