Surrey Cup Final[edit]

A pinch of salt about Harry being 'spotted' at the Surrey Cup (properly Surrey Senior Cup) Final before being recruited to Crystal Palace in 1921. A check of the table of Finals in the Surrey Senior Cup wikilink article show that Kingstonians got to the Final in 1914, when he was 17 that year, before reaching that stage again in 1925 when Harry was already in Crystal Palace. It is probable he may have been spotted at a later stage cup tie when the Kingstonians had not yet been knocked out pre Final.Cloptonson (talk) 19:52, 17 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I have since discovered an obituary in the Shropshire newspaper Shrewsbury Chronicle that dates his joining Kingstonian to following his leaving the army in 1919, which, assuming its veracity, gives a narrower window for him being spotted by his next team's manager.Cloptonson (talk) 13:08, 19 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Later life - information to be confirmed[edit]

I recall about 50 yrs ago reading a newspaper obituary in Shropshire Archives of Albert Ernest Harry not long after first seeing his grave in Leebotwood churchyard in Shropshire. It mentioned he was a player for the 'Palace', as well as an army veteran of WWI and that he came to Leebotwood village when he became publican landlord at its Pound Inn (still running). I revisited his grave this morning and find his death date is given as 3 January 1966 (hence 68 years old), and it also mentions his widow, named Dorothy Vera, who died 16 December 1988 aged 87. I will try to look up the obituary again when I find an open time to visit Shropshire Archives.Cloptonson (talk) 10:38, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I have been able to revisit Shropshire Archives today and reread the newspaper in question which I have used to cite the information added to this article today. On the whole it gives a compact narration of his career. It states he went into the pub trade but omits mention of Oakamoor, instead mentioning his periods as pub landlord in the villages of Leebotwood and Dorrington in Shropshire.Cloptonson (talk) 13:11, 19 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
