Etymology[edit]

I was once told by an inhabitant of the island (agus e a’ bruidhinn ’sa Ghàidhlig rium) that the name is Beàrn-tràigh. This makes a lot of sense, it’s a huge beach and it’s in a ‘gap’, the Sound of Harris. So an all-Gaelic interpretation. If it is folk etymology, just matching Gaelic words to Norse ones then it does make an awful lot of sense. Usually the hallmark of incorrect folk-etymologies of the sparrowgrass / Blue John type is that they make zero sense, so this seems to me to be entirely worthy candidate, and unless we know anything about the particular personal name or spot any actual bears roaming around then I think it is no worse than the Norse. Indeed the analysis as just Another ey / øy / aigh island may have been leading us reasonably astray if this really a tràigh. I would dearly like to mention this worthy candidate but there’s no suitable reference to a ‘reliable source’. CecilWard (talk) 01:35, 29 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

"BERNERAY actually belongs to HARRIS and not North Uist as stated in the title." - what does "belongs to" mean? This Berneray is closer to and connected by a causeway to North Uist. I think the whole of the Outer Isles is managed by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (previously Western Isles Council). The article name is chosen to distinguish, as on Berneray. I am not sure that Berneray, Harris would be clear. Berneray, Sound of Harris probably would be OK. This sentence should only go back in if it can be explained and supported with a reference, but probably not in the lead. Finavon (talk) 19:13, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
