Birthdate[edit]

I found his birthdate through a google book search. Which appeared in a book titled World Authors 1990-1995

Wife[edit]

The New York Times obituary (published almost a month after Knox's death) identifies his wife as Betty Baur[1], and Google turns up scattered references to Betty Baur as Mrs. Bernard Knox.[2] However, a 1990 article in The Atlantic says he married Bianca Van Orden[3]; a 1999 book forward by Macgregor Knox identifies his parents as Bernard M. W. Knox and Bianca VanOrden [sic][4]; this article from War, Literature & the Arts also gives his wife's name as Bianca[5]; and Google also turns up scattered references to Bianca Van Orden as Mrs. Bernard Knox.[6] --Arxiloxos (talk) 15:56, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bianca Van Orden was the pen name of Betty Baur. Jpowell (talk) 15:52, 26 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I have suspected that might be a possible explanation, although I haven't found any source (reliable or otherwise) that says this. Even the Copyright Office filings (which exist for both names) aren't helpful--the filings for Bianca VanOrden don't mention Betty Baur, nor vice versa. If you know of any source that might be out there, it would be nice to add it to the article. Thanks again. --Arxiloxos (talk) 16:05, 26 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
http://www.tnr.com/article/books-and-arts/77450/the-warrior-humanist-bernard-knox?page=0,0 Here you have it in a published obituary. Also it was referenced in the obituary in The Times of September 2nd (unfortunately it's behind a paywall, but it was in print :) ). Jpowell (talk) 10:03, 5 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I'm adding it and deleting the tag. (There is still conflict among the sources as to the exact spelling of VanOrden/van Orden/Van Orden, but I guess we will just have to live with that.) That is an excellent article; I will try to add more to the Wikipedia article from this source later. --Arxiloxos (talk) 16:51, 5 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WW2 Influence on his scholarship[edit]

Where is the reference for the claim that his introductions to Fagles' translations are subtly influence by his wartime experiences?

Sounds like a subjective point of view on the author of this and should at least be backed up by a reputable scholar, preferable more than one. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pandaros (talkcontribs) 01:20, 11 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
