Merge[edit]

A separate Benjamin Garver Lamme article was created in error. It should be merged into this one and replaced with a redirect. I notified the creator of that article; maybe he'll do it. —mjb (talk) 08:53, 22 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I copied the "Benjamin Garver Lamme" material to the "Benjamin G. Lamme" article, in preparation for the merger. The "Benjamin Garver Lamme" article should be replaced with a "REDIRECT Benjamin G. Lamme". Greensburger (talk) 18:12, 22 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Advisory service in World War I[edit]

I found a source (an alumni annual from Lamme's high school) which says Lamme was tapped by Woodrow Wilson to serve on Wilson's "War Advisory Board". I believe this actually means he was selected for the Advisory Commission of the Council of National Defense, or perhaps he was a member of the Ohio branch of the Council of National Defense. Specifically, the quote is

During the stirring times of the great World War when President Wilson needed the counsel and aid of a man who was regarded as authority in the matter of electrical engineering, he picked Mr. Lamme, an Old O. B. boy, class of 1883, to fill a place on the government War Advisory Board, who was then Chief Engineer of the Westinghouse Electric Co. at Pittsburgh, Pa. Mr. Lamme filled this position with great honor to himself, his friends, his school and the nation.

However, I think I may have found the answer: in 1915 he was appointed to the Naval Consulting Board by the Secretary of the Navy. Apparently it was also known as the Naval Advisory Board. This committee was not hand-picked by Wilson at all, and I don't see any direct connection between it and the Council on National Defense. Nevertheless, it was of service in WWI, and may be what the alumni annual was talking about. I'll add it to the article. —mjb (talk) 07:00, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright status of original version of this article[edit]

When this Wikipedia article and its duplicate were created, I believe the content was copied verbatim from an article on Lamme published in the History Center section of the IEEE website. That article would've been under the general, all-rights-reserved copyright for that whole site. That version of the article also indicated that it was taken from the journal article "Benjamin Lamme and Giant Generators", by James Brittain (Proceedings of the IEEE 83:11, November 1995). Thus its publication here, even with the minor edits we've made, could be a copyright violation.

However, later in 2008, the IEEE History Center was replaced with a wiki, the IEEE Global History Network. This site bears a new copyright notice saying that the wiki content, unless otherwise stated, is now "copyleft" by way of GFDL licensing (same as Wikipedia). The Benjamin G. Lamme article was migrated to the wiki in late 2009, notably sans any mention of the journal it originally appeared in.

Hopefully, there's no problem with basing the Wikipedia article on the IEEE version, and going ahead with whatever edits we want here.—mjb (talk) 07:00, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
