Why called bell?[edit]

It is called the bell character because the sound used to be a bell? Melchoir 03:26, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes; as I recall, teletypewriters ("teletypes" or TTYs) had electromechanical bells, and receiving a "bell" character would cause the TTY to strike the bell with the hammer via a solenoid. To maintain backward compatibility, video display terminals (VDTs) that replaced TTYs included speakers or buzzers to perform the same function, as did the personal computers that followed. - Johnlogic (talk) 18:19, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Gong[edit]

Instead of using control-B (for "bell"), do you reckon that control-G could have been selected to ring the "gong"? - Johnlogic (talk) 18:19, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm pretty sure that there would be no need for a gong on a computer. 70.234.133.108 (talk) 04:51, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If bell character in article...[edit]

Would including the actual '' character in the article cause a "ding" when it loaded? 65.96.201.130 (talk) 02:29, 10 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Only if displayed on a TTY or similar. 24.205.46.147 (talk) 08:10, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The unicode character U+2022, a bullet, is also converted to BEL for some reason. The seemingly random beeping drived me nuts for two years until I finally found out what happens. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.122.63.157 (talk) 13:10, 18 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

BEL in Baudot code?[edit]

I'm not sure that Baudot codes contained BEL. ITA2 does, but that's more recent. See Baudot code, or here. I'm not sure what's right, so I won't remove the claim. Proxyma (talk) 07:27, 22 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Emoji BELL vs BEL[edit]

I recently removed an unsourced statement added by @PaulGS BELL was not "already assigned" to the emoji character, as BEL was assigned in 1991, and emojis were not added to unicode until 2010. The main article on Unicode has details related to the revision history. Unicode KindMaker (talk) 17:47, 25 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Unicode has no names for control characters. Aliases were added much later, around 2011, and BELL (the emoji) had been added by then. Here’s a discussion if it, and the name collision is also mentioned in the NameAlias.txt file itself. https://unicode.org/L2/L2011/11281-control-aliases.txt PaulGS (talk) 19:07, 25 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
