Reason for creating this new page

This page will not remain a stub for long. It is part of the WikiProject Cocktails Cleanup Project and specified in the Hierarchy of Articles and Categories as the best place to discuss and list (at least initially) beer mixes. Until this point, beer mixes have been incorrectly lumped in with cocktails.

If anyone has anything to add to this article, please do so. This is essentially a placeholder until someone can add more information. I'd prefer that someone be someone other than me. :-) --Willscrlt 12:38, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

Shandys and Matters of Style

"beer mixed with lemonade; soda water; and ginger ale, ginger beer, or other soft drink"

It seems like there is a lot of soda and not much beer in this description. Which are the critical ingredients, which are optional, and which are the greatest in amounts by volume? Once that's sorted out, the description in the list should be arranged more or less like this (please excuse the improper grammar :-)

- beer, most ingredient, next most, and least. Alternate1, alternate2, or alternate3 may be substituted for original.

Please avoid referring to beer mixes as "cocktails" (because if they are true cocktails where there is more distilled spirits than beer, they belong in the List of cocktails#Cocktails with beer section instead of here), but may be referred to as "mixed drinks" or "beer mixes" (or both for variety).

The descriptions should avoid phrases like "a beer mix consisting of beer,..." or "made with beer, ...", because all the drinks listed are "beer mixes" and they are all "made with" the ingredients that follow. The extra wording gets in the way of readability and increases page length needlessly.

Caffeine Bomb links to an album, not a cocktail

Caffeine Bomb links to an album, not a cocktail. This Google Search makes me wonder if this drink is commonly known by another name? I've never heard of it, but I have heard of a lot of really obscene experiments with beer. Anyway, if this cocktail is not known by another name then it probably is not notable. I (or you, or someone) possibly need(\s) to go through this list and verify these drinks..(\?)

Liquid Viagra not accurate name for Red Bull/beer

The actual name for Red Bull and beer 1:1 ratio mix is a Freddy Krueger. This was coined by Michael Nichols and Kel Scott of Lansing Michigan years ago. The reason that the name is Freddy Krueger is because if you drink it you will probably stay awake all night but if you do go to sleep you will experience serious nightmares as a result of consuming this concoction. Thank you for allowing us to make this correction. Please express our condolences to the guys who came up with Liquid Viagra. Midori is only 40 proof—I wouldn't exactly call such a mixture "fairly potent", as a cocktail. (As a beer, it would be "potent." But not as a cocktail.) But I wonder what others think. --Mr.98 (talk) 22:53, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Definition of beer cocktail

Snakebite is very clear in it's description and name that it's a beer cocktail. However it doesn't have spirits in it? Snakebite can't be a shandy, a shandy needs to include beer and a non-alcoholic beverage ref, and the snakebite is two alcoholic beverages. Snakebite might not precisely fit the definition of beer cocktail, but it's a more accurate description than shandy. This page also contains references to Black and Tan and Black Velvet, neither of which contain distilled alcohol either. Either they need to be removed, or snakebite needs to be re-added. --Pjaymes (talk) 23:24, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

probably also worth mentioning that The Washington Post lists snakebite as a beer cocktail in this article cited on the snakebite page. Do we have a citation to support the definition of a beer cocktail as requiring a distilled drink? If not, I can't help feeling that there is more support for snakebite being defined as a Beer Cocktail than not; either way though it really isn't a shandy, and we need to fix that.--Pjaymes (talk) 23:44, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

All these beer cocktails do not reflect the modern skill of beer cocktail design but rely on putting shots of liquor in a pint rather than a balanced interesting drink you would serve in a grown up bar rather than a Frat-house party .
