Serious overlap with beth, bet[edit]

Must be solved in an elegant manner, w/o too many repetitions. Arminden (talk) 16:18, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Change of concept needed; also templates needed to help reduce the number of items[edit]

@Bejnar, Ketiltrout, Editor2020, and Zhomron: hi, you seem to be the last active editors who've made more substantial or more recent edits here.

The lead indicates that this page is a dab for all articles whose titles (and body of text?) contain the Semitic word for 'house', no matter how it's been transliterated (spelled) in English, even though the DAB is called "Bayt". So we're talking of:

  • bayyit
  • bayit
  • bayt
  • bait
  • beit
  • bet
  • beth

and maybe there are more unusual forms out there.

The following problems arise:

  1. There are already DAB pages for beth and bet, and beit has its own article with an extremely narrow and specific scope (metrical unit of poetry).
  2. There are dozens of examples, mainly for Arab place-names, containing "bayt". Those can all be collected automatically by using {{srt}}, but what then? Remove all "Bayt"s and leave just the other spellings? The entire current structure (sections by topic: places, institutions etc., with important examples explained as to show the range of the term) would collapse. And, as an answer to that:
  3. Is there a way to add such {{srt}}-type catch-all templates for the spellings which are NOT in the title of this DAB page? That would solve the problem.
  4. Creating separate DAB pages, one for each spelling, would defeat the purpose of collecting all that belongs together (they all mean 'house' in Semitic languages), even if it would solve the technical problem. Maybe keep a main page, even as an article, not a DAB page, and the others just as DAB "satellites", linked to the main page? But who would write it? Articles require research and RS, as opposed to DABs.

As of now, I stopped collecting all those endless "Bayt" examples after adding the {{srt}} template at the top, but the result is neither fish nor fowl, just a wretched compromise. Help! Onel5969, hi, you've helped me out in a similar matter, maybe you have an idea, or maybe know whom to contact? Thanks. Arminden (talk) 20:46, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks for the ping Arminden, but the short answer is, this isn't a dab page, as per WP:PARTIAL. In fact, it's not even a set index article. At best, it's a list article, which should be titled, "Place names which include Bayt", or something similar. This page should be moved to a List article, and the redirect should go there. beth and bet are both valid dab pages, but nothing on this page would simply be referred to as bayt. I could be wrong, but that's my take on it. You might also pose the question at the teahouse. Regardless, now you've piqued my interest, so let me know how it turns out, please. Onel5969, I thank you for offering your advice & opinion. Honestly, I'm not at all into the technical part of editing, so I don't even know how index & list articles work and how they are created, technically speaking (templates, tags). I have already left a message at the teahouse. What I'm hoping for in such cases is either somebody who's into the topic anyway taking over, or good & user-friendly advice ("How-to for idiots"), and then I finish the job. There are two purposes here: one is to offer the info about the Semitic word or root, the other - a DAB (or list/index page, whatever), for the obvious practical reasons. Sure I'll ping you. Cheers, Arminden (talk) 21:18, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Arminden - my gut feeling is that this should be turned into a list article. If that's the advice you get from Teahouse, and need help doing it, don't hesitate to ask. Onel5969 TT me 22:16, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • I agree with Onel5969: WP:PARTIAL applies here. A DAB page isn't meant to be a list of articles containing a term. It's a list of articles which could be named the disambiguated term (i.e. the idea is the disambiguated term is ambiguous and could be the title of the listed articles.) I don't know much about them, but if you're looking for some help on creating a toponym article, we have a few and you might find looking through Category:Toponymy helpful (Category:Slavic toponyms, at least, seems to have articles of a form that might work).—Ketil Trout (<><!) 22:03, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, it should be a list page, with appropriate cross-reference/see-alsos. --Bejnar (talk) 15:37, 1 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I recategorised this as an article in Category:Words. It still requires a clean up. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 11:21, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
