Bias[edit]

It's shame articles like this are lauded over by the Dutch (wars that are seemingly far more important to them) and all but forgotten by the English. Makes the historiographical selection rather one sided. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.232.112.2 (talk) 11:10, 29 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

date of battle[edit]

I am not an expert, but in everything I have read, this battle is supposed to have taken place on June 3, 1665, not June 13, 1665. Please advise. 82.227.118.211 11:03, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It was on 13 June according to the present Gregorian calender (New Style), 3 June according to the Julian calender the English then still used.--MWAK 12:33, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Order of Battle[edit]

In this article, "James himself commanded the van, the squadron of the red flag" while in Order of battle at the Battle of Lowestoft "the Red (or Centre) Squadron was under the Duke of York" (i.e. James).

What was it? Was red the center or the van squadron. Creuzbourg (talk) 14:46, 22 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The Orders of Battle for both the English fleet (who was in van and centre) and Dutch fleets (origin of ships in each squadron) at 15 November 2019 were incorrect. These have now been revised using a credible source. Sscoulsdon (talk) 08:58, 16 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sources[edit]

Prior to November 2019, the basis for much of this article dated back to 2005 or 2006 and had only one reference to a Dutch-language source and no in-line citations. It seems to have been written by the Dutch contributor that was simultaneously writing a more comprehensive version in Dutch wikipedia which is devoid of any sources or in-line citations.

There is one credible English language source, a chapter in a book by Frank Fox that is devoted to the Four Days' Battle, which gives an account that is significantly different on many respects to that which was put forward before November 2019. In the absence of any stated English sources and no in-line citations from the one Dutch source, that account cannot be preferred to that of Frank Fox. The Dutch source mentioned is accessible on-line and it's possible to translate it using Google translate. Generally, it confirms what Frank Fox says and adds points not in Fox.
