paradeleader baton versus military versus official symbol[edit]

1. It's not clear to me how the parade-leader's baton differs from an admiral's.

2. Other than the Indio example, it seems like everything here is military, would be nice to clean it up to just be military symbol.

really we need an overal baton page[edit]

That would allow us to use the etymology section for all the sticklike batons (because it applies to all) and also allow us to discuss the military batons separately from other official uses (parade leaders, Bolivian Indians). TCO (talk) 19:38, 29 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

need refs[edit]

Article really needs references and am dropping a note at mil history for help.  Especially for all the third reich stuff which is the bulk of the article.  Google search and google scholar were not helpful.  Maybe I am not limiting the field's properly, but just come up with instances of field marshals carrying them, but not of the details of their apperance.

Batons[edit]

I have added a {{dubious}} tag to the claim that Wellington received 12 batons. In addition I have cited 3 sources. A paper in 1852 lists 8 batons in detail. English Heritage currently have 10 on display, photo included. One was stolen in 1965 (10+1=11). There is nothing I can find online to identify 12 - I spoke to a bloke at English Heritage Apsley House on phone today. He confirmed they have 10 - 3 of which are English, he also told me about the robbery in the 1960s - I traced that to 9 Dec 1965. If anyone has a better source regarding the 12 claim I am very interested - but just disputing this 12 claim for hell of it, I require a solid source also, if possible, for other articles. Serfeit of capitals?[edit]

Does this sentance really need this many capital letters?

The Origin of the Command Baton is remote but common to all pastoral societies and the ones in Egypt and Rome are manifest through Art. In western Europe most are later variations of the ones Consuls received and that represented the over all command of those tied to the Fasces that represented the Roman tribes that composed the Roman People. With time they came to be extended to the commanders that held the supreme authority, civilian and military over the provinces of the Republic, and later under the Dictatorships and finally the Emperor.
